Anyone using a dairy alternative?

So LO can't handle dairy and I am worried about using soy. When he was an infant soy made him gassy though I know things could have changed.  Right now he is on an organic hypo-allergenic formula but it is crazy expensive and he is still pooping a ton.
So any one have an lo with a fussy stomach happily using soy or anything else like coconut, rice or almond?   What did your doctor recommend?   What was your thinking on selecting the alternative?

Re: Anyone using a dairy alternative?

  • thanks @limabeanmom - we tried lactaid and that didn't work for us, I think he might have a milk protein allergy besides being lactose sensitive.

  • we use almond or coconut.  G was sensitive to dairy for a while, but we are reintroing.  WCM seems like a lot on top of the yogurt and cheese he gets, so we do something else.
  • DS drinks an almond and coconut blend, which my pedi said was just fine as an alternative and he loves it.
  • @limabeanmom - at our 12 month our pedi said go WCM cold turkey even when I told him I was worried he might be sensitive to dairy, when that didn't work we tried lactaid on our own....both caused diarhea for him so we went back to our formula after those two fails and I am going to bring it up at our 15 month but I wanted to get a sense of what other pedis were saying too.

  • What about goat? I have read that people with lactose issues often don't have an issue with goat milk. We use it and J prefers it to WCM. It's more expensive but worth it if it works.

  • @botanicalbliss and @trisha625 - I am leaning towards a combo of almond and coconut too - just to clarify your pedis said this ok even if you aren't BFing ?   I have heard breast fed kids don't need a dairy beverage but wasn't sure for those that weren't getting any supplemental BM.

  • Hmm. I'm not sure about non-bfing since I do bf, but when I asked about weaning to a wcm alternative she said almond/ coconut would be fine. But she also said she wasn't that worried about wcm for him because he is above the 99th percentile and she said the whole fat want really necessary if he has other healthy fats in his diet.
  • My LO has a possible milk allergy- its still undetermined. She gets splotchy around the mouth with straight cows milk- but is fine with cheese, yogurt, baked in dairy, etc.

I am still nursing 2x a day, but I am not really sure how much she is getting now that I'm not pumping, I doubt I have as much supply.

She gets a few ounces of soy in sippy cups at meals.  Both the pedi and a nutritionist have assured me its perfectly safe.

Just be very careful replacing WCM with almond milk. It's basically water, with some calcium and stuff. But it has virtually no fat and no protein. And very few calories. So if you choose to do almond milk just make sure they're getting plenty of fat and protein in their diet. J loves almond milk, so sometimes we give that along with goat milk.

  • just out of curiousity @coffeeandbooks, how long did you try wcm? We switched S to a gentler formula because she was sensitive to dairy as well. Like your pedi, ours said to switch cold turkey to wcm and for the first week or so she had explosive poops that made us think it was the milk. it did subside though and most of the time she's just fine with it. I think she does occasionally have a flare up which causes her to puke it all up or poop for days, but I think the transition from formula/bm to wcm is actually a bit disruptive to their tummy and some digestive issues are to be expected.

  • @flyliceandcoffee - we tried WCM for two and lactaid for a week or so.   He was actually totally fine on WCM the first week and then came bad diarhea which I was told was a sign of an allergy after a build up because it came after multiple exposures.
@jedimindtrick - thanks, Jedi, I agree none of the milk alternatives have adequate fat or protein so we will definitely need to supplement.
