On the morning on my due date I went to the doctor and was still only dilated to 1, 80% effaced. I went home and by 12:45 that night I was feeling the beginnings of some contractions. I alerted my fiance and he said "let's go back to sleep." I tried, but they kept getting worse, I started timing them and they were between 3.5 and 7 minutes. By 3:00 am I told him to call our doula, I wanted to go to the hospital NOW. We had planned on having a natural birth which meant staying at home for as long as possible, but the contractions we so bad, I felt that things were moving fast and we needed to go. We called the grandparents and headed to the hospital. I was all so surreal, we had been planning this for 9 months, but we really had no idea how it would play out in real life. My fiance didn't think the hospital would admit us yet, he thought I was overreacting...we got there and low and behold I was dilated to 4 and they admitted us right away. The contractions intensified all night, by around 8am my midwife checked me and I had dilated to 6. Two hours later I was still at 6 and the contractions were becoming unbearable. We tried getting in the shower, but sitting proved too painful, I felt a ton of pressure down there. The ball wasn't comfortable either. Back to laying in bed on my side. My plans had been to walk the halls, and bounce this baby out, but nope, these things all sounded too painful. Another two hours later and I was still only at 6, I practically felt the baby bouncing off my half opened cervix as I buried my head in the pillow and breathed. After 11 hours of contractions and no more progress I threw in the towel and asked for an epidural. At first my doula ignored me, thinking I wasn't serious, but I insisted and we called for the anesthesiologist, I literally felt like I couldn't take one more contraction. After getting my epi I was like an entirely different person, the room became calm again, I could look at and carry on conversations with people. Throughout the rest of the day my cervix slowly opened and at 7pm they asked me to start pushing. The first hour of pushing was a breeze, the epi was still taking the edge off and it actually felt good to push. Then came in a nurse who called herself "the closer" and things started getting really painful. Two and a half hours after starting pushing I thought I was out of energy, the pain, the 21 hours of labor and the intensity of it all had gotten to me. The "closer" told me 5 more contractions until she was out, and it took 6. Her little hand was tucked under her chin, this made it so that her head did not tip down like it normally should and hence the super long and painful pushing. They put little 7 lb Avalon to my chest for a split second before rushing her off to the nicu. She had pooped on her way out, and her breathing was distressed, so they took her to the nicu to be evaluation. 5 hours later they brought me my perfect little girl. August 1st was by far the most painful day of my life, but it was all worth it as I fall more and more in love with my little girl every day. The best part about my long delivery is that I didn't tear, well nothing that required stitches, just minor tears and a hell of a lot of swelling. They told me Avalon was 8.2 lbs at 37 weeks, and luckily they were wrong, she was only 7lbs at 40 weeks, thank god!!
