Arrested for cursing in SC

"According to North Augusta law, disorderly conduct generally means, to "utter, while in a state of anger, in the presence of another, any bawdy, lewd or obscene words or epithets."

According to what I heard on the radio, a fellow shopper called the police on this woman.

Thoughts?

  • This is absurd.

  • You can ride a motorcycle without a helmet, but you can't cuss in public--more evidence that South Carolina is a ridiculous place (my apologies to SC residents/natives, but y'all know that shit is true).

[-( SC is great, it's the busy body loud mouthed lunatics living here that give us a bad rap.

I think it's ridiculous to curse at your kids. (if she even did that) It's also ridiculous to call the police for it. Even MORE ridiculous for the police to arrest someone over it.
  • I would be so screwed!

I don't curse @ my daughter, but I am terrible with them slipping out around her.

  • It is one thing to call the cops if you suspect abuse but after reading the article, the woman went too far.
It said it reminded her of her abusive childhood which is sad. But that is her issue that she needs to deal with...
Anyway yeah wayyyyy more traumatizing for the kids to see their mom arrested rather than hearing the f word...

  • Ummm. So 1 person saying they heard someone drop the F bomb is enough evidence to arrest someone? I think this will get dropped. I can see if the police actually heard it firsthand, but what some lady thought she heard (especially when the accused is denying using that word) is hearsay, isn't it?

Ok so an incident is ANY police dispatched place

But that looks like a ticket to me. If she was arrested it sounds like to me she was shitty to the cops. They can arrest on this based on law and pissing off the cops just allows them to enforce it.

Again a hate to be pro-cops but I am willing to bet there is more to the story.

In Texas it's illegal to drive without insurance which they can but don't have to arrest. If you are really crappy like harassing the officer they will arrest you. It is well within their rights to do that as officers. Rule number 1, don't lose your temper and they won't theirs. They HAVE to respond to calls of service and they don't want to be there anymore than you did for a dumb law.
  • So yes, I think arresting her for swearing is extreme, but like others said, I'm a little side eyed at this whole situation.  Shopping tirp at 10:15 with two kids and her husband...and I would not be surprised if more happened than they are reporting.  Plus, grammar...it's your friend.  (I know that is being really picky and snarky, but come on).

I also think this is an interesting topic, the whole "mind your own business" thing.  This is a long topic for another thread I'm sure but remember the "it takes a village" mentality?  Where is the line?  If my kid is being bad I would want someone to tell me - if something DD is doing isn't safe I would hope another parent would stop her if I couldn't get to her in time.  So we want help - but when?  I know people have said others shouldn't interfere but sometimes it is ok...how do we know?  We judge the way other kids act in public but would any of us step in and do anything?  Likely not at the risk of insulting the parent, but why is it so bad?

Sorry, words are hard for me lately but I hope that makes some sense.
