Re: Birth Photography!

  • ...I dont know how I would feel about a professional photographer snapping pictures of me while giving birth.

But I would love to read the responses from people who have had it done. I can be easily persuaded.

  • @jaztastic‌ I was on the fence too, but I really want to have this documented. My husband already said he is there for support not to be a photographer. lol. He also does not want any other family members in the room with us, but agreed to the photographer. She is also a doula, but I am going to only be using her for the photography.

Thats not a bad deal if she is also a doula. I mentioned that I dont mind visitors while laboring (my mom, best friends) but I just want it to be private when actually delivering. So now that you have brought it up, this maybe a reasonable option. We could always choose which pictures to share.

  • Dd was born and went to the nicu. Her hospital pics are day 3 of life because we were very stressed. I also didn't want pics of her with a nose tube and iv lines and oxygen, etc.

That being said, I think she was so much more photogenic after a few days of life, a bath, head rounded out, I cleaned up a little (*wore fresh yoga pants and deodorant on at least one pit), and we did a few pics.

When she was 15 days old we took her to our newborn photog and got the beautiful Anne geddes style pics we really wanted. I also have an etsy problem so had all the little crocheted booties and headbands, etc all picked out for the occasion ;)

I like traditional pics though. If you like photojournalism and more realism the birth photog might be for you.

  • I really, really wish I had a photographer for Adeline's birth. We were planning on having my mother and MIL at the birth but they missed it by about 5 minutes. I have a few pictures that DH took but he was more focused on me and the baby than taking pictures (which was GOOD)! I don't want crotch shots, but I would love to have someone capture that first moment that my baby is brought out of the water and put on my chest. That "holy shit look what I did" moment is pretty incredible!

  • The only photo we have from DS's delivery is one a nurse took of DH holding the baby already cleaned and wrapped in a blanket. But the look on DH's face is so wonderful; it is my favorite picture of him, better than any wedding pictures.

If you can afford it, do it.

  • My DH is good with a camera and he took a number of photos. I told him he could take whatever pics he liked, but I maintained "veto power" to delete any I wasn't comfortable with. He got some really good shots, I think. Not professional quality, but nice pictures all the same.

I hired a professional to take pics of my DS at <2 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year, and was glad we had a professional for that, but I'd rather just have my DH in the room for the birth itself.
  • I didn't with my first and wish I had. I will hopefully have one this time.
  • I have a few with him on my chest that DH took, that is all I really wanted.

I look TERRIBLE!  like I am about to cry and try to give him back

  • My doula took photos of the birth. It was perfect because by the time the baby is crowning I had plenty of midwife/nursing support and she just stepped back and was able to capture the moment. Some of the photos are a bit "graphic" and I wouldn't share with the world, but they are very special to me. That was one of the selling points for me for the doula I chose.

I love birth photography!! I actually shoot it too, and it is always an awesome experience!

I regret not having it with my first. So that is one of the first things I did with this one. I am having a rcs so I made sure to have a doctor and hospital ok it and got the photographer all squared away.

With my first I couldn't dream of having someone there, but honestly you don't notice them. And so many people that have had them weren't sure about doing it and ended up loving it saying they were so glad to have them and see the love and support they got or small details they missed.

  • I'm not really into birth photography. Having a baby is great, but it isn't necessarily a moment I'd want to relive. DH is really good about getting tons of pics after the baby is born. My mom always gets shots with me exposed in the background (she is not invited to this birth).
I'm more interested in getting newborn pictures and family pictures.

  • Honestly, if it were in our budget, I totally would do this! I think it would be such an amazing moment to capture (by a professional... not my husband who asks every two seconds where the flash button is, how to zoom, all while the camera is actually off) :-p

Many of the photos I've seen by professionals are tasteful, not too graphic (at least the ones posted on social media), and are really beautiful.
  • I don't think I want anybody but my DH to be in there. So if he's up for it he will take a few shots and that's gonna be if.
  • One of my best friends is a professional photographer. I didn't have her photograph DD's birth but always wish I had. So when it came time to deliver DS my DH surprised me with having her photograph everything for us. I was honestly so happy to have one of my favorite people in the world taking part in such an important moment in our life. She shot everything in black and white and they turned out really beautiful. I am hoping she will do it again this time but she is due a week after me so we will see. :)
  • I'm having a professional this time. Pictures are amazing and birth photographers know how to be the fly on the wall.
  • DH sucked at taking pictures the first time around. I have a doula this time and I'm hoping she'll take some pictures for us.

  • My BFF is a photographer (and we plan to ask her to be god mama:) so I'm going to ask her to take our birth photos. That way she can be there for the birth and take our pics. I'm sure I'll look like crap but I want those first pics regardless. I'm a FTM but I feel like I would regret not having them.

  • I love the idea but I don't know how I'd turn out in real life haha birth is painful I don't any shots of me in labor or baby crowning or anything like that.... But it would be wonderful to have a picture when they just put your newborn in your arms. But I am betting my husband could take care of that if I asked. However, after your baby is born you are so in the moment, you don't think about pictures at that time. I wouldn't want a photographer in the room during labor, it would feel like added pressure for me. It's just all such a vulnerable experience!
  • I am so thankful we had a birth photographer with DS, and plan on doing it again. So much of that day is a blur for me, and I'm glad I can have the story from photos to help me treasure even more the gift of my son.

This pic is my favorite of all. People say they can't see when they're that fresh, but I know my baby looked at me on day 1!!

  • I have considered doing this if DH ends up deploying over the birth. Id love to have beautiful memories to show him if he can't get to a web cam or something.

Other than that I think I'm happy doing a few family shots during newborn photos once I've recovered a bit.

  • I'm having a RCS, so I don't plan on having a birth photographer, but we are doing professional newborn shots once we are home. I have a girlfriend who does a "first 24" session, but it just doesn't seem worth it to me with the RCS.
