Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Earlier bed time?

LO is almost 8 weeks old and we usually all go to bed between 9:30 and 10:30. His first sleep stretch is usually between 4 and 6 hours, then I feed him and he goes back to sleep for between 2 and 4 hours. Lately he has been sleepy and falling asleep at 8 or 8:30. Should we just be putting him to bed at 8 rather than having him nap at 8 and wake up and go to bed again at 10ish? Right now he's waking up for the day and ready to play at 6-7am and I'm worried that if we put him to bed even earlier he'll wake up to play at closer to 4am . . yikes. I'm a FTM so I don't really know how is newborn bedtime/sleep schedule thing works. Thanks!

Sleep begets sleep... at least that's what people tell me!  All babies are different and you need to do what works for your family.  At that age, my LO was going to bed b/w 7-8pm and waking around 6am with MOTN feedings.  Around 3-4 months, he slept from 6:30-6:30 with 1 MOTN feeding.  Then the 4MW hit.....

  • I think I'm in the opposite boat. 6 wk old over here. I've been trying to do LOs bedtime routine with my 4yr old, which puts me trying to get him to sleep between 7/8:00. Then he does his longest sleep stretch 4-5 hrs, but of course I don't go to bed until 10ish :/ . After that is a 3 hr stretch. And then he gets up 5:45/6 ish. I've been able to get him back down for another hr & he wakes for the day at 7:30. I'm wondering if I get him to bed at 8, if I should wake him at 10:30 for a bottle & then hope he does his 5 hr stretch as soon as I go to sleep. Afraid I'm going to trow everything off if I try this tho...

I think PP is right. We've got a little more time until we can try to get them on our schedule. I go back to work in 4 weeks so I'm hoping a routine at daycare during the day will help us fall in to a schedule.

  • My baby is 10weeks old and I wa doing the same thing (sleepy around 8 but I'd keep her up til 10with bedtime routine), but I found that led to her being over tired and not sleepin a well. Now I just follow her cues and if she is sleepy at 8 she goes to bed. She dies normally sleep a longer first stretch when I put her down earlier. Yay for 6-7 hour stretches! Good luck.
