flavoring your baby food

my babe is just starting solids and wondering if anyone has experience w flavoring their food?? want to develop a nice broad palate and try hard to limit the 'white foods' -- got this neat little herb infuser-/ so there won't be bits of rosemary in the food but a hint of the flavor-- obviously babies around the world are used to much more flavorful baby food but it's not the norm here -- won't start garlic just yet of course but anyone have input ?? little curry or nutmeg or basil .. milder ones ??

Re: flavoring your baby food

  • So you just mean using spices?

I've never heard that called flavoring so I want to make sure I understand correctly. Check out baby lead weaning's website. They've got good advice about spices.

I make my own purees but basically leave them natural to taste like the fruits or veggies they are made with. I guess we are starting with a blander flavor palette but I did add cinnamon to apples and sweet potato and he loved it!

  • I accidentally bought a pouch of squash with cinnamon to bring with us on vacation. She ended up loving it! At first she looked at me like WTF is this woman?! I think it's a great idea to introduce new flavors though!

  • When are we allowed to add spices? I've heard of using cinnamon but I've never heard of rosemary, curry, etc. Aren't we supposed to keep them bland for a while? No snark, just curious.

Some spices may seriously hurt your baby's stomach so I would strongly recommend asking your pedi first. I think cinnamon is typically ok as I just saw some recipes online on making apple sauce with a dash of cinnamon for babies. I supposed mild fresh herbs like cilantro and rosemary should be ok too but curry I am not so sure about. Traditionally my family has used very mild turmeric in some foods as well. We typically boil chicken in pinch of turmeric powder before making a purée.
  • I've heard curry and cumin to broaden LO's pallet, but I haven't checked with our pedi yet.  I was planning to wait until at least 9 months.   I'll be watching this thread for ideas.

  • Well, I've always served LO the foods we're eating, so LO1 has had a wide range of spices/flavors without incident since 6m.

I truly don't know if/what the 'rules' may be (and I'm sure those vary anyway) but I can't imagine ever day spices being harmful in normal amounts.

  • 'flavoring ' 'seasoning' whatever u want to call it ! I'm planning on using a variety and not worried -- just thinking of what might be easy on the newly developing gut at first and how I can keep introducing new tastes! ie.forgot about cardamon -- thanks for ideas gals --

My kid likes burritos and spaghetti with my husband's homemade sauce. We do all seasoning/spices from the beginning. We got flamed for it in the June '12 board with DS1, but I'm confident in our feeding choices. We just avoid honey - anything else (barring choking hazards) is fair game.
