making a tutu

I googled around and it seems the no sew kind is all the trend right now. Originally, I wanted to sew it, but I'm wondering if anyone has experience with either method,or both, and what your recommendation is.

Re: making a tutu

  • I made one for dd to wear at her 6 month pictures. I used a woven head band and looped tulle through. Worked well for what I needed it for. But at the time she wasn't mobile so I'm not sure how well it would have stayed up if she was walking.

I don't have a good picture of it. Sorry!

  • i made a no sew one for dd..tulle is hard to cut in straight pieces if you're impatient like me...i also made it like 15 sizes too big..i thought i wanted "a little extra" for room to grow..but that little extra, plus the stretchiness, meant that i can wear it too lol...so make it smaller if you want it to stay on her. it mostly stayed on dd (almost 2 at the time), but only at the perfect angle. walking more than 5 feet and it would start to fall.

  • The headband is so clever! @Foofie&thebean‌ I agree, I'm not sure how well it would work now that lo is so mobile. @jennlin‌ the no sew has you knot it around the elastic. I feel like dd would pull on it and and wrap them.… did you double knot it or did it stay with a single knot?

i did the kind of knot where you fold the tulle in half...stick the "U" portion...the bended portion through the hole. then take the two loose ends and stick through the hole and pull tight.

  • @tyrannosaurusbeck‌ you are too sweet! I am so touched that you would offer to make one for Olivia. That tutu came out absolutely adorable!! I cant believe that only took 20 minutes! I already bought the fabric and elastic and am so excited to make it. I wanted to make her outfit for her first birthday party. I grew up with a lot of homemade things and I really want Olivia to have that.

  • I did no sew for DD1's first bday. So simple!!! Ribbon, tulle, and scissors. That's it. So I say go for the no-sew.
  • You can get tulle on a roll like ribbon. MUCH easier than cutting. I've made a couple with a piece of elastic and rolled tulle. It takes 30 min. You should do it!

  • Omg I'm so excited! Thanks, ladies. I'll make sure to post pics when I'm done! I'm so excited I think I'm hoping to make her one for our pumpkin farm trip too. Joann's has tulle on sale for 70 cents a yard f anyone is interested.

  • Ive made two, one with the crocheted stretchy headband and one with ribbon as the band. The ribbon was easier to craft with the headband was was easier to put on her. Oh I used shears to cut the tulle, the fun edge made the not-straight lines easier to deal with. Joanns (fabric and craft store) has rolls of tulle 6in wide by 3yards I think... so much easier to work with that bolt yardage.

I don't have a picture with her in them but here they are off.

  • Thanks @deedee1017‌ they were super easy to make and didn't take long at all.

And I got the tulle that comes on the rolls and have plenty left over.
  • You guys are too good, I just paid someone on Etsy to much money to do one for her bday party. Can't see what you ladies make.
  • I am making Molly's Halloween costume out of a tutu... I used a piece of elastic and just sewed it by hand for the top. I found that I needed about 50-70 yards of tulle from my 6 inch roll. Here's the inspiration and my work in progress:

  • @hollydawnburke‌ I was going to do that costume for dd! I love it! Looks great so far! I can't believe it requires that much tulle! Dh wanted to do a family thing, so I might make a Tinkerbell costume.

  • @deedee1017‌ thanks! I had to go back and buy more tulle yesterday... Luckily it was on sale at Walmart. 100 yards, six inches wide black or white for $5. Now to figure out how to stick the eyes and mouth on.

wow! What a deal! I'd probably stitch the eyes on or hot glue them. I feel like stitching might be cleaner and neater.

the ghost costume I saw had the tulle skirt and a white onesie. The white onesie had the eyes and mouth on it.
