Weaning the pacifier

Hi ladies.  I rarely post here but lurk on occasion....so sorry for the drive by!  I just wanted to see if anyone here has experienced similar pacifier/sleep issues.

DD has been napping like a champ in her swing (1-3 hours at a time).  I was able to put her in there awake, pop in the paci, and she would put herself to sleep.  The last few days have been pacifier hell.  She doesn't keep it in her mouth (which is totally normal) but she will wake up every fifteen minutes and cry until I get it back in there.  I can't keep up with that nor can our DCP when she starts in a week and a half.

I thought I would try taking away the pacifier as she has developed a sleep association with it.  It's a battle to get her down to sleep.  Once asleep she wakes after 15-25 minutes rooting for her pacifier.  She's clearly tired and frustrated and so am I :(

Has anyone else had experiences like this?  I can't figure out where to go from here.....keep the pacifier away and hope she figures it out?  Give the pacifier back for naps?  I should mention...we do have other techniques we use for soothing (white noise, rocking, swaddle, shhhing)

Re: Weaning the pacifier

  • My LO does the exact same thing. She can only fall asleep by herself with a paci but she spits it out once she falls asleep. If she wakes up half way, she screams until we put it back. She also doesnt care for the paci when we first put her down. We have to keep it there for a minute before she takes it. Its like she doesnt know she wants it.

I told the day care lady about this a couple weeks ago and she said its totally normal. She said it's actually a good thing that she is not sucking on it 24/7. Its good to let them know ahead of time so they know what to do.

  • We are in the same boat too. Hoping it gets better when she finds her hands but interested to see if anyone else has suggestions!
  • My friend said she put a couple drops of lemon juice on the paci and gave it to LO. He stopped wanting it after that. But her kid was much older at the time... Like closer 9 months.
  • We have a wubbanub but it hasn't helped to keep it in. I have given her the pacifier for soothing when she's awake but it has been two days without it at naps.  I got a 2.5 hour nap out of her today...woohoo!  I'm hoping we can continue the pattern tomorrow.

  • With DD1 I threw them all away and she was over it in a day

  • I googled it. WHY ARE PEOPLE HOLDING THEM???
  • Holy crap! The huntsman spider is a huge mofo!! I don't think my vacuum (my preferred spider killing technique) would suck it up
  • Come on now ladies... the vacuum just sucks up the spider and pisses him off... He will just crawl out and seek revenge.

Lol!! I put the vacuum outside when I'm done!
  • Thanks for the heebie jeebies ladies. That spider is massive and I would never sleep again if I saw it. I miss Alaska, very few spiders.

I am so freaked out by spiders that I make Dh kill them, flush them, and wash his hands before coming near me. And then I don't use that toilet for a while just in case!

Yes dead spiders go into the toilet, not trash can! H couldnt understand that for the longest time.
