If you still nurse to sleep

I know, I know. I am breaking the rules by still nursing to sleep but I don't plan to stop any time soon because I am a rebel. But I have a dilemma. DH and I have two nights out planned soon so I need to leave LO at bed time. So I am a little nervous about this. She is with a nanny three days a week and goes down fine for naps without nursing (for both me and the nanny) so do you think she will adjust at nighttime? Both nights we will be out well past her bedtime so it's not like she can just stay up a little late til we get home. So have you left your LO who nurses to sleep yet and how did they manage? Any special tips?

Re: If you still nurse to sleep

  • I nurse to sleep, didn't know I was breaking a rule. Finally went out last night but was home right around bed time which worked out bc he refused a bottle for the 3 hours I was gone. Hope you have better luck!

  • That is what I am afraid of! Maybe we will do a trial run one evening when I am not too far away

  • Hopefully she will. I nurse my lo almost to sleep and then lay her down in the crib drowsy at night. I don't nurse bf naps and it works and she is able to take a bottle instead when I'm gone. I do have a friend though who still nurses to sleep at 1 year old and she literally cannot leave her daughter ever bc she won't sleep without her.

  • I haven't had to be away at LO's bedtime yet but I nursed my first to sleep at night for 13 months. The nights when someone else put her down she was fine. Took longer but that's to be expected I think. We kept everything else about her bedtime routine the same.
  • We nurse before bedtime.  Sometimes he falls asleep, sometimes he doesn't.  By the time we put him in the crib, he's awake though.  A few times he's fallen asleep with a bottle instead of nursing.  I don't consider this "rule breaking."

  • I'm sure she will be fine. I nursed my older son to sleep until he was a year or so and plan to nurse LO to sleep until he doesn't need it. I wouldn't trust anyone who advocated not nursing a 4 month old to sleep if they've shown that is what they need, so screw whoever told you that "rule" :).

  • I also nurse to sleep, or usually it's more like nurse to "almost" sleep then put him down drowsy. I had to leave town for 3 nights last week for work, and DH had no problems - LO would take his bottle, get drowsy, and DH would have to rock him a bit more than usual to get him down, but that's about it. It was very anti-dramatic, I was kind of hoping the baby would care more that I wasn't there to put him down!

  • I nurse to sleep and I love it. I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

Two nights a week DH gives her a bottle and she goes to sleep because I'm at work still.

Maybe practice putting her to sleep drowsy like was mentioned.

  • I nurse to sleep- i enjoy it and don't plan to stop! My LO takes bottles to sleep just fine, she has done this several times from MH and my mom. I was nervous the first time but she did great- I think it helps that we give her a bath before bed each night- it's her trigger.
  • I agree with the bath, LO knows it's bedtime when he gets it. I still nurse to sleep as well, thought I would have to quit since I heard it wasn't good to do. So glad to hear about other moms who have done it for a year or more! Maybe I will just keep it up as well!
  • @macynsnoop - I nursed my DS to sleep for a long time, until he was ready to give it up. It was the last nursing session I held onto.

DD does get a bath every night, which she loves, so I will make sure they just keep the rest of her routine and hope for the best. One of the nights we will also be OOT for a wedding and are bringing someone to watch DD while we go to the reception. So she is likely to be really out of sorts.

  • I nurse to sleep too. I know I'll only be able to do it for so long. I wouldn't worry about it.
  • I nurse to sleep. The two times I have left DD overnight, my stepmom have her bottles to sleep. She didn't sleep as long but it worked fine.
