Trouble TTC

When tv hits too close to home

Spoiler alert and fictional pregnancies mentioned

I've been watching brothers and sisters on Netflix. I started when I was recovering from surgery. Great show and I really love it! But these unexpected IF curveballs have been hitting hard!
First Tommy's got if issues. Then kitty has a miscarriage. Where in at now, baby Elizabeth just had the lover transplant and both tommy and kitty's if issues came up again. Bring on the tears!

  • I hate when that happens in movies or TV. It makes me so sad. It's one of the few things (other than someone losing their mom) that makes me cry during things. Normally, I'm pretty stone-hearted when it comes to fiction and nothing phases me, but kill off a mom, a dog, or someone has IF or losses, and I'm balling.

Oh me too! I love to watch them (we have hbo go) and I cry every time! I guess I always thought I was most like her character so I feel even more sad! I shouldn't watch those ones but I can't help it!

I haven't seen that show, but when I recently rewatched all of Grey's anatomy I had forgotten about Meridith's "hostile uterus" and it hit me really hard, but in a good, empathetic, "I'm glad this type of thing is being portrayed but damn I hate it that I know what she's going though" sort of way
Same here! Little did I know the first time I watched it we'd be going through IF too. Ever since I bought my Puregon pen yesterday all I keep thinking about is the episode where she's on injects and then it causes her to start to lose her vision and is forced to stop treatment!  :-S

IF issues in TV bum me out too, but I usually just feel a ton of empathy.  It's the shows where the characters get KU on the first try that bring me down the most.

I watched a show that was on a couple of years ago called Up All Night (with Christina Applegate and Will Arnett) about a married couple with a baby.  In one of the first episodes they reference how they got KU because of one night of passion and a bottle of cheap wine.  I was maybe a bottle deep into some wine myself when I was watching the episode and I started sobbing.  Thankfully DH was not home or he'd never have stopped making fun of me for drunk crying at a sitcom.

@theholmanherd - OMG...if a dog even gets hurt in a show or movie I am done.  Seriously cannot handle dog pain.  Those Sarah MacLachlan ASPCA commercials are my kryptonite.

  • TV kills me! Especially Parenthood.

    ***** Potential Parenthood Spoilers*****
This damn show. It seems to hit me so hard because it has been touching on things I'm dealing with for a couple seasons now. First, Julia and Joel having trouble TTC during my first go-round with it, and then Kristina's cancer story line when my mom was going through cancer treatment. Ouch. I love that show, but cry at almost every episode.

  • Sorry that IF topics are messing with your show. :(

I just discovered a hidden gem - the show Lie to Me - and I was amazed that several episodes over 3 seasons surrounded issues of IF, IVF, surrogacy. It was kind of cool, but of course you find yourself finding flaws in the realism!

  • Does anyone else get totally irritated at shows that get conception science completely wrong?  Like when they know the baby's sex WAY before 20 weeks?  Or like on HIMYM when they told Robin she could never have kids after she came in for ONE beta test after a missed period?  Yeah, no...it takes a whole hell of a lot more testing than that.

  • @kmdecoux - YES!  I thought the same thing on that HIMYM episode.  Like, really?!

I LOVE Parenthood but I have a feeling when I start watching the new season next month I'm going to be an emotional wreck.  All the kids in the show.  The whole big family dynamic ...reminds me how much I want that.  Last season for some reason, I didn't find it as hard to watch.  But I think in the last 4 months or so is when I've started having a harder time with all things kid/baby related.

    First appointment with RE 10/2013.
    April 2014 - Clomid 100mg CD3-7.  HCG shot CD10 IUI #1 done on 4/12/14 (CD12) ....BFN
May 2014 - Break cycle to repeat saline sonogram and re-group.  Travel to Kauai 5/7-5/12 (Yay!!)
    June 2014 - Clomid 150mg CD4-8.  HCG shot CD14.  IUI#2 done on 6/9 and 6/10 (CD15-16) w/ Prometrium suppositories during TWW .... BFN
    July 2014 - Clomid 150mg CD3-7.  Ultrasound CD12 - 4 mature follies! HCG trigger shot CD12 AM.  IUI#3 on CD13 w/ Prometrium suppositories during TWW ....BFN
July 2014 - Repeat ultrasound done to measure size of fibroid - 8x9cm (the size of a grapefruit!) Surgery referral made.
August 2014 - MRI done which revealed 2 fibroids: a 13x15cm fibroid as well as an 8x7cm one.  Super freak out mode over surgery plan.  OB-GYN/surgeon said surgery would most likely have to be a laparotomy (open abdominal surgery)
August 2014 - After a 2nd opinion, plan to take Lupron x 2 months to shrink fibroids then laparoscopic/robotic myomectomy.  Surgery date is set for Nov 21st!
November 2014 - Robotic myomectomy done (2 large fibroids removed, mild endo found).  Benched x 3 months

    PAIF/SAIF welcome
