Re: BF/FF how often per day?

  • I feel like btw solids (cereal and fruit, cereal and veggie, and meat, veggie, fruit for her meals), she only nurses 5 times a day at the most. I feel like that's not enough, but she refuses sometimes.

  • We do four 8oz bottles per day and 3 feedings of solids. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner).

  • Three feedings of solids and six breastfeedings plus they usually nurse at least once during the night. My babies like to eat

  • 5 times during the week (4 bottles and one nursing) but less on the weekends. He sleeps significantly better at home compared to daycare, so I think he tries to make up for lack of sleep there. Therefore, he doesn't eat as much.

This but all bottles now because I just weaned.

  • She has 4 bottles during the day plus 3 nursing sessions when I am home. We are BLW but taking it very slow - only at dinner time and not every night.

Why do you think that's not enough? (This is pretty much exactly what Brennon is doing, FYI. I just don't do cereal at lunch. ETA: And I do a bit of steamed food BLW style when possible.)

  • I still nurse on demand. It varies from day to day and honestly I don't keep track. I know he is getting enough by his wet diapers. We started solids, but he had an allergic reaction. I'm almost positive it was a reaction to carrots (WTF??) so I restarted introducing each solid to him to see what happens. I think I missed his initial reaction to carrots. He had a small rash on his belly that I chalked up to his sensitive skin, but when he broke out in hives the rash was a lot angrier and redder. DS is getting two meals of solids per day and we are taking it very slowly.

  • Usually 5-6 BF and two "meals" of purée. It's only been about a week that she's eating really well with the purées. She didn't really get the food thing before.

Going from 8 plus times a day to 5 was a big change (for my boobs, anyway) as soon as we started solids. I also feel like she's not getting as much BM as she should. IDK....she's prob ok.

Usually about 5 times including the night feed. Sometimes on DC days it's only 4 if he takes larger (6 oz) bottles at DC. I was feeling like it wasn't enough. According to our First Born Home Visitor it was on the lower end of the spectum. But from reading about all of your babies I feel like we are about on course. If I had to guess, I think he eats 5-6 oz even when he BF's and his MOTN feed is HUGE, so I would say he is close to the 25 oz a day still. ETA: He eats solids probably 3 times a day. Daycare does a small snack of maybe a few puffs plus a BLW lunch. I do BLW dinner in the evenings. Probably about 3-5 oz of solids a day. It varies depending on his mood.

I hear ya. BZ was at about 6-8, now he's down to 5-6. I do half sessions and pump the other side to keep my supply up because I was worried about it. (I've had supply issues since about 3 months.)

@peanutmuse - I'm also seeing that she eats for 1/2 of the time she used to...gets distracted by dog barking, brother running around, Mickey Mouse clubhouse theme song, Elmo's voice, the asshole kid that lives down the street with a loud muffler....so, it's like she's done within 10 mins. She's either efficient as hell or I'm not producing a lot and she prefers the solids bc it's less work....??

They definitely get more efficient. When my LO was a nb it would take almost an hour for her to finish a feed. Now 5-10 mins and she's done. I used to think she wasn't getting enough but realized when she drinks a 5-6oz bottle she is done it in 10 mins tops. So that reassured me she's just a better eater now. She is also a super distracted eater so we usually feed in her room in the dark.
  • Usually a minimum of 5 times, but the middle of the day feeds are sometimes only 2-3 ounces at a time. Some days it feels like she has a million bottles, but whatever. We feed on demand. She's still so barfy so I do not push large meals on her.
  • SS here, I usually don't comment on food/poop related topics 'cause DD's just in a different realm due to the cf.
She does follow a fairly typical pattern though: nurses 6 times a day. 4 of those times I give her solids first, then top her off with BM. She gets about 1,000 calories a day and is just now gaining at a more normal weight... She's almost 13lbs and still wears 0-3!

  • @MiaMyPuggle‌ Thanks! She's doing really well, it's a lot of extra work but we've been at it since she was 3 weeks old, so it's just kind of normal to us now.
The biggest struggle lately is 3am pooping sessions(wakes up gassy and screaming until its over)... Probably due to the amount of food we shovel in... I'm hoping she adjusta back to daytime soon, dealing with messes half asleep is just not cool.

  • Hhmm I thought for sure I proof read the above at least twice... Now that I'm a little more with it I should say that motn poops are the latest frustrations. Any baby could have a similar thing going on, I think of it as cf related because weight gain/absorbing-not-pooping-her-food has been our struggle.

  • I put 6 times, but I feed on demand so it varies. For sure when she wakes up in the morning and before bed, and then usually before and after each nap (she takes two). Sometimes another time or two are added in there if she's fussy. They aren't all full feeds, some of them are comfort feeds so only last a few minutes. I feed her solids usually twice a day at lunch and dinner.
  • I feel like btw solids (cereal and fruit, cereal and veggie, and meat, veggie, fruit for her meals), she only nurses 5 times a day at the most. I feel like that's not enough, but she refuses sometimes.
@MiaMyPuggle I was worried at first when DD's feeds started getting shorter and somewhat less frequent (although she does still nurse at least 6 times a day, for some of the feeds she only nurses for a couple minutes). I talked to my mom and she basically said that if DD was hungry, she'd eat, and that I shouldn't stress and try to make her eat more often/longer. Seems like common sense but I guess I just needed to hear that from someone who's been there/done that.
