Homemade baby food

Even though we aren't starting solids for a few weeks, we are harvesting our fruit trees and starting to get fresh veggies and fruits from friends and neighbors so I want to use the surplus for baby food. Any suggestions/ ideas on how to prepare & freeze baby food? Are you making or buying baby food?

I pureed tons of peaches today and froze them in ice cube trays and mini muffin tins. We'll see how that works.

Re: Homemade baby food

  • ^^ perfect method!

In my experience, carrots need lots of added water in the blender. So does chicken breast. Avocado freezes very well due to the high fat content. Broccoli is hard to purée.

I need to get on the baby food train here too!

  • So far we've done carrots, avocado, cereal and banana. We've puréed and froze in ice cube trays.

  • Just from experience your peaches may turn brown...when we freeze or can ours you have to add an acid source. We use lemons but Vit. C tablets crushed work as well.
  • Random aside - this was part of the packet I got at the doc yesterday. I did carrots for DD1 and she's fine, but the more you know I guess.

Heard the same thing. Craziness! We have a tray of puréed carrots, and then I read something similar to what you have....what to do with my carrots?
    :-??
Add them to your pasta sauce.

  • I'd still feed the carrots and such. When we made our own food I always used organic or home grown.

  • I roasted/puréed nectarines, parsnips, and butternut squash, and steamed/puréed sweet potatoes, mango, and zucchini last week. I'll do batches for the other foods as time permits. We don't use purées for very long-about 2 months-so I'm hoping I won't have to make any more of these foods.

  • Is anyone else super excited to start solid foods? Seriously I'm giddy over it. We are waiting till 6 months but I'm counting down, I can't wait. I have no idea why.
