Pregnant with gallstones

I'm about 20 weeks now with baby #2 and was wondering if any of you got gallstones while pregnant last time? My ob/gyn sent me to the ER yesterday when I called because of abdominal and shoulder pain. Sure enough I have gallstones and got sent home with instructions to take Tylenol for pain and a low fat diet. I'm hoping they clear up on their own after pregnancy. I do not want to end up having to remove it! Would love to hear your experiences. Thanks!

Re: Pregnant with gallstones

  • No experience, but I'm wondering if I've got them. I've been having issues with my gal bladder. I'm gonna ask on Wednesday at my appt.
A girl on my bmb had them and had to get surgery to remove them.

  • No experience but one of my good friends had to have her gall bladder out at around 30 weeks pregnant with twins! She was extremely nervous (obviously) but everything went perfectly fine.

  • I have no experience with this but I keep seeing the title and thinking how terrible this sounds. Hope it clears up!

  • Yes. I had attacks that would make me scream and the only relief I got was if I purged. But I had an abnormal case which lead to pancreatitis and removal post baby. If they're not super awful try chugging water when it start to hurt.

  • I'm so sorry :( I had 6 gallstones last time. I actually had to have my gallbladder removed while 17 weeks pregnant with N. They missed the gallstones and my clips in there burst. I had to have the gallstones removed while pregnant but it was only a day surgery. They can zap them with those things they put down your mouth/throat. It was instant relief. Good luck! If you need to talk, I'm here for you.
  • Thanks, ladies! Sorry some of you had to go through this, also. I feel fortunate that I feel much better today. @CoffeeBeanFiend91‌, sorry about your pancreatitis. My sister had that and I know it's awful. My diverticulitis pain was way worse than my gallbladder yesterday. I had to spend 3 days in the hospital for that last Christmas. I'm a mess even though I swear I'm a healthy person. It's just so frustrating! @Maelara‌ thanks for our support, also! I feel better knowing y'all had healthy pregnancies despite these challenges. Xoxo.

I had all the morphine and N is an amazing, bright little girl :) the pain just sucks. It helped when my DH rubbed my back and a heating pad (not on high, obviously) helped too and so did a nice warm bath. I hope the low fat diet helps! There are other things you shouldn't eat either so do some research on what will hurt. Basically anything rich that will cause your gallbladder to work harder.
  • I ended up in hospital twice while pregnant with DS for gallstones. Ended up,having to have my gallbladder removed at 23 weeks. Surgery was smooth and no complications. Gallstones are the worst!

  • I saw my ob gyn today and she wants me to go ahead and meet with a general surgeon so we are prepared "just in case". As much as it sucks to have it I'm so glad y'all were able to have the surgery and successful pregnancies.

What about after affects? Life without a gallbladder? My sister had hers removed after her delivery and she has gained a ton of weight and blames her gallbladder surgery. But let's be honest, she drinks like a fish and doesn't eat healthy.

Life without a gallbladder, hmm. It's harder to digest rich and fatty foods so your liver will compensate for it. You stomach will hurt like a bitch when you eat those foods. I'm not a doctor but I also think your sister is full of it. After N was born last time I lost the baby weight very quickly. I gained 10lbs after that but that was my own doing. I ate EVERYTHING! Now I have actually lost 28 lbs. She's full of crap. Your body actually has a harder time digesting the bad food and you don't want that pain anymore, so I would say the opposite is probably true.
