I have a pee question.

Do you provide a urine sample at each routine OB/MW appointment?

With DS, for some reason I thought I remembered having to pee in a tiny cup at every single checkup.

This time, I've only given one sample and that was at my very first appointment (I've had 2 appts. since then).

Did something change since 2011? Or am in remembering incorrectly, maybe it varies on the Dr.?

ETA: I had an OB last time, this time I'm using a MW team. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Re: I have a pee question.

  • I have to submit a urine sample at my OB office at every visit. When I go to the MFM office I do not.

  • I have an appointment in 30 minutes. I'll have to ask today I guess.
    I thought it was weird.

Not that I really want to pee in a cup, but I thought it was kind of necessary.

  • I have to at every appt!
  • I love the title of this discussion :)

    I pee everytime.

  • Perhaps your last 2 appointments weren't very far apart? I didn't have to the very first time I went in cuz it was just talking to/meeting a doctor or the 2nd time a few days later for the dating u/s, but I've had to both times after that (8week apt, 12week apt) and will now continue to do so each month.

  • Every time I have an appt I have to pee in the cup. They don't even remind me anymore-they know I head straight back there because I ALWAYS have to use the bathroom as soon as I arrive.
  • With my last pregnancy and this one I only peed in the cup at the first appt. All of my friends have to pee in a cup at every appt. Not me!! I am ok with it  :)

  • At first I was with an OB, and now I am with a midwife. With both I submit a urine sample at each visit. It is a little different because with the midwife they have a little cup and test strips in the bathroom. I test my own urine and show it to her if any odd colors come up indicating an issue.

It is important because finding certain minerals in your urine can be a sign of issues like gestational diabeties. Or bacteria can be an early sign of a UTI. So I would definitely ask why they do not check.

  • I have only had to one time. That kind of makes me nervous because you can have an infection and not have any symptoms which can be really dangerous.
  • So far I've peed at both appts. Possibly TMI but genuinely curious question: do others get explicit instructions about wiping/cleaning beforehand? At my practice we're instructed to use 4 packaged towelettes and wipe front to back, once, with each. Then pee a little into the toilet, then pee into the cup.

No nothing like that now.  But I remember having to give a urine sample YEARS ago, and I had to wipe, pee into the toilet, then sample cup... So that has been my normal routine ever since. (unless I dont have a lot of pee to give in the sample, then I skip the pee in toilet part)

  • I usually do... but I haven't yet.  I don't think they worry too much in the really early weeks.  It's to check for protein in the urine which is an indicator of Pre-E.  I would have at my last appointment, but I didn't have to pee at the time, so we just skipped it.  :)

@freegiraffe - it's probably to eliminate the "trace" results for protein you get from washing particles into the cup when you pee.  My midwife doesn't worry about having a "trace" result, so I get no specific instruction, other than to try to catch the urine mid-stream.  They figure the first little bit washes away any debris, anyway.  All those towelettes sounds a little excessive to me....

  • I see my family doctor right up to the end and she makes me pee in a cup every time. I go to an OB starting at 28 weeks and there I don't have to. The reason I do both doctors is because I live in a smaller town and I want to deliver in a larger city so the OB there takes care of that but they don't feel like I need to drive in all the time for a short appointment.

Yup. Mine isn't 4, but they give you a package with two towlettes in it.
  • I have to at every visit!
  • They give me a towlette and a cup to pee in at every appointment. With my DD's at another practice I had to pee in a cup every time too.

The standard of care is to check the level of protein and glucose in the urine. However they recently changed the definitions for pre-e (where protein in the urine was previously required for the diagnosis, now not anymore), so maybe your practice is doing something different?

Most groups don't do a full dip each time w your urine (checking for WBC, blood, nitrites--stuff that indicates UTI) unless you're having an issue or have a hx of recurrent UTI.

ETA: I pee each time at the OB and at HR-OB (MFM). ;)

  • So yesterday I had to pee in a cup. Thank goodness, because by the time they called me back I was about to pee myself.

I asked why they don't do it at every appointment and the nurse told me that since I don't have any indicators for urine detectible issues, that they'll only start to do it after 24 weeks on a regular basis unless something comes up.
