Babies: 0 - 3 Months

2 month appt. coming up, need advice....

I have heard that because of the amount of shots that DD will receive that Tylenol is a good idea.  Do I give it to her 1/2 hour before her shots? I also plan on taking a bottle and feeding her in the waiting room to get her nice and full. Are those wise ideas and/or do you have any other suggestions so that I can prepare?

  • You'll probably want to wait to give the tylenol until after the appointment, since dosage is determined by baby's weight.  Your pedi will be able to tell you how much to give.

I agree on making sure she has a full belly for the appointment - nothing like giving shots to a cranky/hungry baby.

  • We gave her Tylenol about 30 minutes before. Make sure she gets it within an hour of her shots.

C cried. Screamed actually. Broke my heart. It sucks. I would probably feed her afterwards and not before. Afterwards gives you something to distract her wth. Oh and the screaming lasted abou 10 minutes. Then she was out.

But I've also heard of babies that didn't even flinch at shots so you might get lucky!

  • Haven't done the tylonol thing (maybe check with your pedi's office for dosage?) but if you BF, you can BF right before shots or during.  Our pedis' office is really pro BF, and I've always just fed through the shots - he crys a little, but not much, and he usually goes back to eating very shortly after the shot.

  • i didn't give dd any tylenol before shots. we have gone 3x and only needed to dose her once.

and, i fed her right after the shots to calm her down and she just fell asleep.

  • I suggest you take the Tylenol with you and ask your pedi about it when you get there. DD weighed so much that the pedi had us up the tylenol dose, which I wouldn't have known to do if she hadn't been weighed first!

Also, it's good for her to be full before just so she's plesant for the check-up, but it's also a good idea to have some on hand for after the shots, for a comfort thing (and also because shots make a lot of babies sleepy, so she may not eat again for awhile! ;)

  • Sorry - missed your bottle info - you could try feeding her that during the shots as well instead of BF.

  • I would feed her before, but wait on the Tylenol until the pedi tells you how much to give. ?Also bring a paci if she will take one - mine screamed bloody murder after the shot but when I hugged him and popped the paci in he was just fine.
  • I waited to give Tylenol.  She didn't get fussy until that night.  Also, she cried really hard for about a minute or two right after.  I brought her pacifier and just held/rocked her to distract her and got her to stop crying.

    Good luck.

  • I am not anti BFing while at the Pedi, but every time I am there, little kids open up the door because they want the POO room or the SLEEPING BEAUTY room not the one the nurse gave them. Needless to say, I am a little modest and don't want my goods hanging out. Thus, a bottle would be nice to give her. Thanks for your advice. DH can't stay home with me on Monday when the appt is, but I told him to be on call in case I couldn't soothe her. He is very very good at the soothing. thanks ladies!
