How much do you pay babysitters?

I know it depends on location/experience - but how much do you pay your babysitter hourly?  We aren't talking anything regular - just a few nights a month.

Re: How much do you pay babysitters?

  • We usually only need a sitter when the preschool is closed for staff development days or in the summers when we piece together care cause the preschool is closed summers. So we tell whoever is coming (we have 2 sitters that we use) that it is a whole day.

With that said, we pay $50/day regardless of the hours - sometimes I'm at work for 4 hours, sometimes 9. That is for a single child but I also pay the sitter that when we share her with another family (have no idea what the other family pays when we share but it doesn't happen often).

  • We pay 12/hour.  I have 4 y/o twins.

Seems like most people on Care.com and SitterCity wanted 15/hr.

  • My husband's 18 yo cousin charges $10/hour. We use her for occasional weekend nights (like 6-10pm). I usually start dinner for the kids, so she finishes up dinner, plays with them and puts them to bed @ 8:30pm.

We have a part time nanny that works Tues/Thurs 745am-645pm (I work two 10 hour days) and we pay her $14/hour + we pay fees for a payroll service (she wanted to be paid "legally") and we also pay fees to the state for worker's comp. We figured out that it is more like $16/hour when we add in the fees. We do love her though. Before we hired her, we checked out a local daycare. They offered part time care for babies (up to 30months) @ $75/day/kid!

I have a SAHM neighbor that also helps me out sometimes and I pay her $10-12/hour.

  • I don't understand the poster stating she pays $50 regardless of hours. As someone who babysat for about 20 years, that would have been unacceptable.
About 90% of people that I asked IRL paid a daily rate for all-day childcare, most of them paid $35-40/day so I thought I was doing well. We have 2 babysitters we use, not a single complaint, and never been turned down. I was also a babysitter growing up but I always told parents they could pay me what they thought was fair (got paid in m&m's once by a neighbor but we were taught to accept with a smile and move on).
  • But I guess if you break it down, 3 kids at $15/hour = $5 per child/hour. I have 1 child and pay between $5.55 - $12.5 per hour. When you consider that, I think I'm on par with what others are paying per child/per hour.
