Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sleep has been forgotten. A little help please.

LO is about 14 weeks and since 12 he started waking every 1.5-2 hours at night. Before 12 he slept amazing in his crib since 8 weeks and waking (at most) every 4 hours. Now the only way to get him to sleep longer is by being held and that means either my falling asleep in the rocker with him or taking him to bed with me. With going on for 2 weeks now I'm at a loss. He has already done his 3 month growth spurt and we have given him gas drops just in case with no difference. We did figure out he has eczema with his cradle cap so we did switch his soap and lotion and that did stop his scratching but made no difference. I thought maybe teething but now I'm not so sure since he's not really fussy during the day and doesn't drool as much as I would think with teething. Seems a bit early for 4 month sleep regression just in my FTM opinion. My other thought would be the wonder weeks 4th leap I'm wondering if this crash and burn in sleep is part of that. It's all getting a bit rough though since he's bf so with that 2 hours he is hungry if he wakes up so he's fed.
Thank you in advance for any sort of help/advice/support and I do apologize for this being so long I tried and failed to sum it up in a sentence or two.

Mine went from basically sleeping through the night at a little over 4 months to getting up every hour to every two hours from 12 on. He was learning to roll over which messes with their sleep when they learn new skills and he was hungry. We had to up his bottles, switch nipples, add rice cereal (mine has a spit up problem so he was loosing so much milk when we switched bottles - spitting up more then normal). Since we upped his intake he is back to normal. He still wakes up once or twice to bf but is back to normal other then that. Your lo could be hungry and need more so just feed on demand at night and two learning new things. Hang in there it will get better. I would get back to a routine though if you had a good thing going. I never bring lo to my bed but that is just my preference. Both my boys never sleep even when they are sick when they are in my bed. So even with bad nights which will happen from here on out, year after year..I still try to stick to routine. Good luck

  • Maybe we'll try a formula bottle before bed and see how that works for him. We've always kept the same before bed routine and start out in the crib. But with him getting not just longer but better sleep lately being held, as much as I dont like to, bringing him to bed is easier. I do see your point and I don't want him getting too used to being held all night. Thank you

  • What time does your lo go to bed and when is his last bottle? For example - mine always eats at 6 when I get home and then I give him a 4 oz bottle at 7:30 and he goes to bed right after. That way he is super full and topped off for the night. Even if he doesn't eat the full 4 oz I know he is truly full when he goes down. Almost like cluster feeding.

  • Bath at 7 and we start feeding at 7:30 and he's in crib by 8:30-9 at the latest. So he gets a really good feeding every night before bed. I also feed him right before bath.

  • It's most likely just a phase then and it will pass. Maybe just offer the bottle or breast right before bed to top him off?

That's a really late bedtime. Have you tried moving it up? Mine was going down at 8:00 and we moved it to 7:30, then 7:00. And he's sleeping so much better. He sleeps 7:00 to about 5:30, when he gets up to eat. Same thing happened with our daughter. She really needed a 7:00 bedtime, which seemed insane to me at the time. (DS is 16 weeks. DD is now 2 and is still an 11-12 hour a night sleeper.)
  • He is tired and ready to go to sleep at 730 so it takes him about an hour to eat so he's half sleeping while he eats 30 minutes on each side. He's just always been a slow eater and it's not until recently at 12 wks we introduced a schedule that he's gotten more efficient and faster at eating.

Hang in there... sleep deprivation is killer.  We just survived the 4MW not too long ago and everyone is still adjusting to the new sleep pattern.  I'm not sure if you're going through the 4MW already but as you already know, LO is definitely experiencing a sleep regression.  Do what you need to help everyone get more sleep.  Keep in mind that a sleep regression doesn't just mean that LO sleeps less/worse... it also means that they need more help to sleep.  That means if you need to nurse him to sleep, rock him to sleep, cosleep, whatever it is, do so.  My guy went from sleeping from 6:30pm-6:30am with 1 wake up to waking up every 45-60mins on the worst nights.  If I couldn't nurse him to sleep, DH rocked him to sleep.  If that didn't work, he slept with us.  You just have to do whatever you can to get through this phase.  The worst of it lasted for 2ish weeks and he didn't develop any bad habits.  I also agree that you may want to bump up bedtime.  If he's tired at 7:30pm, you should start bedtime routine earlier.  Lastly, are you sure that LO is eating that entire time and not just comfort nursing?
  • My LO is going through a similar phase.  He was sleeping 6:30a-6:30p and waking up once or twice to nurse.  Then about a week ago he started waking up every couple of hours, and crying whenever we put him in his crib.  We've had some tough nights sleeping with him in the recliner in his room.  He's 15 weeks, so I'm wondering if it's the 4MW a little early?
  • Bump it up even though we're generally up for the day about 8a? I'm willing to try it if it'll help of course. I just thought a 12 hour night period would be enough. With the schedule, basically napping every 2 hours, his last nap ends about 5pm. If he is doing the 4MW early can I reasonably hope that it will end early too?
