Kidney stones

Anyone ever have one? What did they do? I have a history of kidney infections so I'm afraid to pass it on my own. Its 5mm which on the internet is considered larger. I go see urologist today but wanted any advice or stories from actually pregnant woman. I fear he doesn't know enough about pregnancy too. Thanks:)

Re: Kidney stones

  • I don't know if they will recommend lithotripsy (procedure that breaks up the stone) in pregnancy, but I wouldn't want to pass a 5mm stone either. Your options are somewhat limited, unfortunately. My MIL had one that large, mine was less than 1mm and it was incredibly painful.  My grandmother says kidney stones are worse than childbirth and my dad was breech, so she should know...  Maybe your urologist could consult with your OB and determine the best approach?

  • Ugh.  They are the worst.  I've never had one.  I get frequent kidney infections.  My mother gets them a lot.  Most likely with one that size they will blast it.  They will use a laser to break it up to smaller ones so they are easier to pass.  No experience with pregnancy though.  They are painful.  My mother jokes that she has had both vaginal and c-sections and the kidney stones hurt more.  But if you handle this labors a piece of cake.  They may give you some pain meds to. As long as there is no infection there should be no issue with the baby.  Are you running a fever? Vomiting or peeing blood? They might want to send you to the hospital and monitor you for a few days.  T & P are coming your way.

  • I'm not peeing blood, but it hurts to pee in my groin, and burns when I pee. I'm very cautious too because I lost a child a 16 weeks due to undiagnosed infection in February. I still have some morning sickness so I am throwing up just not sure what from, I have had severe diaherra the past few days also.
  • No fever or blood clots is a good sign. You may have a UTI that they will want to treat.  They may admit you for a few days.  As that stone starts to move you will start to vomit and be in pain so they will want to keep you hydrated for the baby.  Ugh I can't imagine what you must be going through. Keep hydrated as much as you can.  The fact that you are seeing the Dr and there will be some sort of treatment is a good thing.  They will be ahead of the game this time. Good Luck!

  • Passing stones is more common while pregnant because of the increased vitamins. From what I was told they will do there best to make you comfortable if you pass it during pregnancy. I can tell you that when I pass them it is the worst pain imaginable, my urologist says it's worse than a natural child birth. That is a large size stone but I don't know if they can blast it during pregnancy, I was told that wouldn't be an option if I passed one. They may opt in to putting a stent in but I doubt they will do anything until it starts to pass. It sounds like you may have a UTI as PP said. Staying hydrated is important try not to upset your kidneys if at all possible while pregnant.

  • I don't have any experience, but I just wanted to say I am sorry you are dealing with this. I hope it passes soon.
  • I've passed 3 kidney stones in my lifetime and they SUCK!!!!! Worst pain i've ever felt in my entire life. Although I have no experience with them while pregnant, I truly hope you feel better soon. I hope that little bugger makes it's way out of there soon so you can get some relief!

The only time I've passed a kidney stone (stones, actually) was when I was pregnant with DD1. I was 29 weeks, the pain was excruciating, and I was checked in to L&D for it because I also had a fever. I can't remember how big it was, but I do remember them saying the one they saw via u/s was large. The doctor said I had probably passed one or two earlier as well with all the pain I was having. I couldn't even walk or stand up straight.

  • I had a med-free vaginal birth with a third degree tear...and passing a kidney stone was worse.

The urologist told me grapefruit puts the stone in motion. He said I probably had the stone hanging out for a while, but once I started eating a grapefruit a day (oh, college cafeteria), that prompted the stone to move and eventually pass. So, you might want to avoid grapefruit.

  • Just curious,How did they measure the size of the stone, did you have a KUB done.  I called about my yearly visit about a week ago and told them that I was pregnant, they said they didn't want me to have a KUB or any other radiation unless I thought the stone was moving.

  • I had a reneal ultrasound completed where they measured the stone.
  • I've had tons of kidney stones. Even had surgery the week of my wedding to get rid of one that hung around from Feb to June. Make sure your urologist talks to your OB to make sure whatever measures are taken its good for the baby. They are the absolute worst so good luck!

  • I mostly lurk but wanted to let you know you are not alone. I had a kidney stone removed last September. I had to have surgery to remove it (they went through urethra). I also had stents before and after the surgery. The pain from the stone was horrendous and I was vomiting because of the pain. In march I had a follow up ultrasound and they found another stone. I was told my only option was the surgery again (was not a candidate to have the stone broke up). I opted to wait and am now pregnant. I was told that if the stone moves and will not pass I will have a stent placed and changes out every so often until I give birth. I pray this does not happen. My urologist said that I can not have the surgery while pregnant. I wish you the best and hope the stone doesn't cause you any more problems!

  • I have also had multiple stones, at multiple times, with two different surgeries. The last stone I had was when I was pregnant with LO. They had me try to pass it on my own and gave me Tylenol 3 for the pain. (Safest strongest drug they could give during pregnancy without it affecting baby) It still hurt like crazy, but I drank TONS of water and managed. They talked about placing a stent in if I wouldn't have been able to pass it. Surgery was a no-go.
Good Luck! Childbirth will be a breeze after passing a stone that big with little to no pain killers! ;-)
