BF poop

DD poops almost every time she eats. I'm BFing her and a few times this past week, out of the 8 times she poops, 2 diapers look mucousy. It's varying in shades from the yellow to light green but the mucous look to it is new.

Is the stuff I'm seeing normal?

I don't remember seeing it in DS' diapers as he was formula fed after 6 weeks.

Re: BF poop

  • I couldn't tell you if it's normal or not, but it's the same with my little girl! She's 3 1/2 weeks old.
  • Loading the player...
  • I don't think mucous is normal. I'd search the kellymom website.
  • My DD will be 3 weeks on Wednesday.
And thank you, I will check kellymom.

  • I asked my pediatrician this same question & she said it's totally normal for bf babies to poop immediately after eating bc breast milk is so organic it is so easy for their systems to process it. So it goes right through them. My DS is almost 3 weeks & he has the yellow mustardy color poop you describe. I however am unfamiliar with the green poop?

I think the green poop usually happens if the baby isn't getting enough hind milk.

Green poop usually means too much lactose which means baby is getting more foremilk and not enough hindmilk.

ETA: however green stool and mucous in the stool are different. I know someone in the BF thread mentioned mucous in her LO's stool and she had to cut tomatoes(?) out of her diet and the mucous cleared up. But if it's the same consistency as the yellow seedy stools then it's pretty normal just an imbalance.

  • Mucous in stool could be any food intolerance. Biggest ones are dairy and soy. But it could be anything. Blood in stool is another thing to look for, our pedi gave me the tests for ds1 so I could test it. You may also see red or black flecks. Green poo is typically fore/hind milk imbalance. Kelly mom has info on that. However you could just have mucous in stools randomly for little reason- like excess saliva or gut irritation that isn't allergies. LO's that have a cold could have it. So it's not automatically allergies.

  • I've had green poop before and it was normal.  We went a week with it.  I think I wasn't emptying my boobs enough (I'm a pumper) and that's what happened.  I haven't seen it in the past few weeks.

  • We are dealing with mucous in stool now too. His poop is still yellow and seedy, just with mucous. I think it is related to foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, because LO was nursing every 2 hours. I am pushing him to go every 3 hours instead, and it seems to be making a difference in his gassiness.  \:D/ I also have been block-feeding from day one, FTR.

  • I don't think she is allergic to anything. She isn't fussy. I checked out kellymom and did some research thru that website and everything in the fore mentioned posts, plus there are a few things that were mentioned such as a mother who is eating lots of green veggies causes this.
I have changed my diet and have been eating lots of green veggies like broccoli and green beans.
I let her feed on one side at a time but all of today when I feed her I will feed her on one side 2 times in a row then switch sides for the next feeding.
As far as the above mentioned color, the green poop still had a yellowish tinge to it.

Anyway, she seems happy as a clam.

Thanks for all the input ladies.

My LO had the same thing recently. My lactation consultant said the foremilk and hindmilk thing is not likely a problem for any baby. She suggested limiting or restricting my milk protein intake. I did just that and his stools are back to the dark yellowish seedy color. I was having tons of milk prior (milk in my cereal, etc and I did small things like switch to almond milk in my cereal). My pediatrician said that he wouldn't have even worried about the milk protein intake and that it is perfectly normal for BF babies stool to range from yellow to green. The only cause for concern would be if there was blood. But if there is a milk protein allergy, it will go away at 12 weeks and it directly correlates to your intake meaning you do not have to cut out all dairy completely. Mucous could also be your LO swallowing a lot of saliva.

ETA: I wanted to mention that it took a good 2 days to get back to the normal dark yellow color. The green would fade more and more with each diaper change.

  • Thank you. I know it's not a milk allergy. I don't drink milk because I don't like it. I do eat cheese but not enough to make her have the poop. I'm fully going with the greens I've been eating a crap ton of. I know how my body reacts to eating lots of salad and I think that's what it's doing to her.

I don't see any black or red in her poop, so I'm in the clear with that.

I really do appreciate all the responses.

  • @Jdubb13‌ and @AnotherPreggo‌ what is block feeding?

OP, glad you figured it out! Crossing fingers that's what it is.
  • @pinksundrops block feeding is nursing on only one side for each nursing session... alternating with every feeding.

FWIW, milk allergy typically means dairy allergy. DD1 had a dairy allergy, and I had to cut all forms of dairy, including hidden. But hopefully it is just the greens!

ETA: Specks of blood didn't become noticeable in DD's diapers until 4 months.
