How often were you pumping? What type of pump were you using? Were you trying to nurse baby in the meantime? Did you do lots of skin to skin with baby?
Some women do not respond to a pump. The best way to establish a milk supply is to nurse, nurse, nurse....what makes you say you "had nothing to feed her"? On day 1, baby's stomach is the size of a marble...it does not take much to fill baby up.
Were you working with a lactation consultant?
@theresat858 asked a lot of good questions and offered helpful info. I had a c/s as well... Even though I didn't get LO for a couple of hours, we did so much skin on skin time, the only time I felt like I had clothes on was when my dad and FIL visited! Feeding on demand is also really important during this early stage, especially through the cluster feeds. Finally, I worked with the LC at the hospital as much as I could. Will you have access to one where you're at? If so, discuss your goals with her and try to set up time to work together while you're there.
My milk did not come in well with DS1. He wouldn't/couldn't latch, had reflux, and cried all the time. Like you, pumping and stress and not getting sleep took a horrific toll. This time I was very proactive about getting help with bfing. I made myself work on relaxing, asked for help with nursing at every opportunity, and just kept at it. It took 3 days and a shield to get Ds2 to latch, but we're doing well now. I cried in sheer relief when I finally started making milk! It is definitely possible that this time will go better for you.
Re: worried I wont have milk...again
Many women do not respond to a pump.
My milk came in day two but my son also nursed twenty mins of almost every hr. And he wasn't great at it but we made it work.
Best of luck.
