J12 opinions wanted

So we are flying out to see my mom in a couple of week and I have to pay for Emery's ticket so Im taking her carseat on board. I told MH im ordering this and he seems to think its unnecessary.

I kind of think hes being a dumbass and it is necessary.  He wants to cary the carseat through the airport with his hand. I think that is really stupid. We will have 1 carry on maybe 2 + the carseat and kid. We fly at least twice a year.

What is J12's verdict?

Ok we used this. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000JHN3AS/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1407954443&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40 We didn't put DD in the Carseat (yikes), but we attached it to or roller bag and it worked great! I wore DS and DD rode in her umbrella stroller. We gate checked the stroller (always allowed) and our roller bag (small plane so it was required). I do NOT recommend carrying the Carseat through the airport. Ugh!
I saw this but we are chicking the luggage that rolls. Out carry on is a huge duffel bag so we would still have to carry the seat around.

but I agree it seems really ridiculous to cary the seat. And its a heavy ass seat too. We have maxi cosi pria

  • I see the pluses of it but my husband carried Dahlia's carseat and we also had Juno's infant seat, snap stroller, Dahlia in a stroller, 2 suitcases and carryon's and he didn't feel we needed one of those things either and after doing it both ways, I had to agree with him.
    Well damn!

  • I want something like that too.  We travel a lot by plane, it would certainly be handy.  The carseat is the most awkward thing to carry around and it doesn't even stack ontop of those carts very easily if there is other luggage.

I think its a worthwhile investment.

  • You've got me thinking about all this with 2 flights coming up - ergh. After reading up about this I think we will go for a simple dolly. We have to bring her stroller anyway so we can put a carryon or 2 in that as we wheel thru the airport or she will be in it and we will have to drag our carry-ons. Our seat is heavy too and really - the dolly is pretty mininal once folded.
Where do you find a tiny foldable dolly? I liked that this one folded to stow in the overhead bin

I like it in theory, but after having once flown with 12 pieces of luggage between two adults and a toddler, I find it difficult to purchase anything else that will also have to be lugged around, even if it is supposedly going to make my life easier. Personally I would leave the car seat behind and buy a CARES harness for the plane, then borrow a car seat at the other end from someone I trust or buy a cheap one and keep it there for future visits. I guess it also depends on the kid's temperament though - mine would yell and scream about being stuck and demand to be rescued within two minutes of being put in it at the airport.

Yes, this is my answer, too.

We normally do this but she is opposite. She would be a nightmare if not strapped into the carseat. Holding her last time/trying to get her to sit was a awful. At least in the carseat she yells she's stuck because she can't get up but I have some movies and popcorn to help with that.

. Serious question, do you have to put them in a carseat on the plane? I had no idea... X_X
nope.  But we found it incredibly helpful for keepign him contained during the flight.  otherwise he would have been climbing all over us and trying to push all the buttons (like the flight attendant call button)
    This exactly.

The safety factor is important, as is the "sit still" factor. Which is why I did borrow the CARES Harness in case we decide not to lug the carseat (since we already have one there) the CARES harness essentially turns the airplane seat into a 4 point harnessed seat so they can't easily get up like with those easily unlatched airplane seatbelts. Have you looked into it?

I have not, thanks for the link! I have to take her carseat this time because of the time at night we arrive. We won't get to my mom's house till 1am. But this might be handy in the future because my mom bought her a carseat she keeps at her place for when we visit.

Eta: I just clicked on the link... that looks way easier! But it says 22lbs-44lbs. If she is already 40lbs what are the chances of her using it more than once? I know the poor kid is was almost too big for the puddle jumper. I have to have my mom sew on an extended buckle clip. It barely fits her chest. I wonder if I'll have the same problem?

  • No, nvm I see that the height/weight restrictions are due to the seats tilting too much. Shes very near the tops for both. Bummer. That looks nifty and like way less of a PITA. But i think she'd probably only be able to use it twice tops. Unless the next kid comes out normal sized then I'll get more use...

Take a look at the Link on the right side "for special needs" - I know Emery isn't special needs, but it talks about how they recently tested and got approved for use over 44lb and 40". So you should be good to go to use it for awhile if you went that route. Also, until she's taller you probably wouldn't have to worry about getting the exemption letter they talk about, since they're not going to weigh her at the airport!

That's true! She's at 37, I think she grew 2 inch in 6 months... unless she spurts, but they won't be standing there with a tape measure either. With the SN you have to sit in the very last row of the plane because there is no one to hurt behind you. Might still be worth it. Thanks!
