When you are walking or running in a 5k fundraiser event, are you expected to raise funds, or are you just there for support? Some coworkers formed a team at an event to raise money for cancer. They are looking for people who want to join and I'd love to go walk and be there to support, but I'm no good at asking people for money. I'll make my own donation, but if I would be expected to fundraise, I won't sign up to walk (FFThC?).

I'm not good at fundraising either. Last time I ran a 5k I just donated money myself. I don't see a problem with not fundraising and I don't think it's expected.

For the ones that don't, they hope you will fundraise but I think if you are at least bringing a donation from yourself you should be ok. Would you ask even the 3 closest people to you to donate or maybe just post it on Facebook? That way you are raising some money, but not in the awkward position of asking a bunch of people?

I am really really reeeeeaalllly bad at asking people for anything. Instant anxiety just thinking about it. And I don't post much of anything on facebook, so I would feel super awkward posting a request for donations in honor of a person none of my Facebook friends have met. I would likely just give extra myself to make up for it. Thank you for the suggestions, though

I never have. The entry fee goes towards the cause, so increasing the amount of people on the team is part of the fundraising.

Depends on how it's structured. Obviously, the goal of the organization is to raise as much as possible. Typically, if you are just a member of a team, the expectation of you is just a moderate amount. Maybe $50-$100 above any entry fee would be a 'successful' team member for most events. Our organization's annual fundraiser is a walk. We don't have a registration fee. Our goal is for every Walker to raise $100, if you raise that you get the t-shirt. Some walkers raise thousands, some raise zero. I wouldn't feel obligated to raise/donate anything beyond the entry fee, but if it's within your means and you'd like to, a small donation on top of that would be great. We encourage all of our Walkers to raise money from their friends/family because part of the mission of our event is also to raise awareness about mental illness and help to fight the stigma by normalizing it among the community. But that's probably not such a big deal with many physical illnesses.

When I run races I consider my entry fee my donation. All the physical events I have participated in have specified where my entry fee is going. Barbells For Boobs, 31 Heroes, Murph Challenge. Some include shirts and some don't but they all specify that my entry is supporting the cause.

Working and volunteering for several non-profit fundraising walks I say yes, people would like you to fundraise. That's what the point/goal is, in addition to the awareness and support of course. Also, the reg fee isn't really much of a contribution, it basically covers the expenses of the event, I.e. Shirt, venue, food, etc. of course we don't want to make you uncomfortable but fundraising isn't as hard as it seems. You can raise even $100 just by promoting on FB and you never know who has a connection to that cause and actually wants to help. Just my $.02.
