Elsa Louise's Fast & Furious Birth Story

Short: Elsa Louise Blevins was born on Friday August 1st at 4:33am weighing 7lbs 8z, 21in. long - All Natural

Long:
I started feeling the first twinge of contractions on Thursday afternoon at 4pm while at work, I didn't think anything of them as I had braxton hicks quite regularly the days before.  So I went home after work and went about my normal routine.  By 10pm they were starting to get closer together, about 5-7 minutes apart and I was getting uncomfortable.  At this point I called my doctor who told me to wait it out a little bit longer since I had a long drive to the hospital, she didn't want to send me home if I wasn't far enough along.

So, I told my husband to try to get some sleep in case we were making a trip to the hospital later that night.  Around midnight I called my doctor again, as my contractions were around 4 minutes apart, but they were not very regular, I would have two 4 minutes apart than the next would be 7 min, so I was confused being a ftm at what to do.  But with the pain starting to stop me in my tracks and not being able to talk through them, I decided to go in.

I woke up my husband and we made the 40 min. drive to the hospital, over construction as well, which did not feel good during contractions!  When I arrived at the hospital, they sent me to the triage room, when the nurse came in to check me, she told me I was only at 1 cm, I wanted to strangle her...  As she left the room, I looked at my husband and said if this is 1 cm, I want the EPI now, my plan was to go natural.  The nurse came back in and said they were going to send me home, I about lost it, there was no way I could get in the car again.  When she saw my face, she said she would bring in another nurse to check me just to be sure...  When the next nurse came in (my angel), she said I was at a 3 - 4, which was the best news ever!  They then decided I  should go for a walk to see if that will progress things, so that is what I did.

My husband helped me around the floor one time, which felt like the longest walk of my life!  My contractions were so strong, I was barely able to stand through them.  When I started making my second lap I looked at Nathan and said my famous one liner "I feel like I'm going to shit myself!!!"  The look on his face was priceless, he turned me around and we went back to the triage room where he called the nurses back in.  Once I made it to the room, I lost my mucus plug and my water started leaking.  Again, I was relieved something was happening.

So the second nurse came back in to check me and was shocked to see in 20 min, I went from a 3-4 to a 5-6.  At this point, they decided to finally start admitting me.  My contractions were so intense I had a hard time breathing through them, they were monitoring my contractions and couldn't believe how strong they had progressed in the hour I was there.  10 minutes later I was telling them I felt like I had to push, so they checked me again and I was completely dilated!  The whole process was completely chaotic from here...

The next thing I new, they were wheeling me down the hall into a labor room, I went from two nurses to ten, they were frantically ripping surge packs open and preparing the room, all while I'm screaming, I need my antibiotics! (I tested positive for group strep b). Nathan said I probably said that 20 times...  A few minutes later the doctor came running in, threw on her gloves and was instructing me how to push.  4 contractions later our baby girl arrived!

I can't believe how fast everything progressed with this being my first, all the nurses kept saying I had the closest thing to a movie birth that they have ever saw. I was so confused through all the chaos thinking we were going home 1 hour, the next hour holding my baby girl, it was completely surreal and hard to explain all the emotions. It may have helped me get through her birth without any medications though as I didn't have time to realize what was going on! I'm just glad we had a second nurse come into to check me, if we were sent home, we would have been having our baby on the highway! I was at the hospital a total of 3 hours before she arrived.  Everyone was joking that I should find a closer hospital for my next child!

Here is a photo of our beautiful baby girl, we are so blessed she is here!
