High-Risk Pregnancy

Gestational Diabetes and weight gain/weight?

Hi, all... So I had gestational diabetes with my last successful pregnancy, and I'm shocked my doctor hasn't checked me yet for it. I'm 20 weeks along and I ask about it at every visit. She said that since I'm not spilling protein or showing sugar in my urine (I might have that second part wrongly phrased) that she's not concerned yet. Every pregnancy is different, every placenta is different, so she says. I also haven't gained a lot of weight this pregnancy... I started at 165 and I'm now 169. I am 5'9", so I'm a high bmi but not unreasonable. With my son, I gained a lot of weight up front and I wonder if that had something to do with my GD. AnyWay, what have your experiences been with second time GD? Anyone not get it the second time? Did the pregnancy feel the same or different? Thanks in advance...

  • I had it with my first too. They made me test at 11 weeks. I'm supposed too. I passed this time but have to do it again at 28. I know it's hard. I wanted to know ASAP.

  • My doctor was the opposite of yours. He checked me at my first appointment which was at 7 weeks I believe. I already had it again. They test the sugar in my urine every visit and so far so good. I also test 4 times a day and pass most of the time. With my first pregnancy I really struggled to keep the numbers in check no matter how strict my diet was. I only gained 10lbs with my first one. With this one I am up 3 lbs at 25 weeks. I was small to begin with, 138lbs at 5'4", but my doc is not worried about my lack to gain. He said with the strict diet i've been on most of the pregnancy its normal I'm not gaining. It still stresses me out though. Good luck this time around!

  • I just took my Glucose test today and failed so they diagnosed me at 12 weeks with GD. I had it with my last pregnancy too. I have not gained any weight yet so my Dr. thinks I have probably been doing well with my sugars so far but of course I now have to check four times a day. I also have to have a fetal echocardiogram at 20 weeks to check out the baby's heart. Apparently this is something that they recommend when GD is diagnosed early on.

  • I was diagnosed at 12 weeks. I have a family history of diabetes. I am now 17 weeks and have lost 26 pds. I had to do a complete lifestyle change.

Hopefully you will not have the same results, it is no fun. Good Luck!
  • I was diagnosed at 24 weeks with my first pregnancy and with this pregnancy, they tested me at 16 weeks and I passed. My OB has not indicated that I will have to test again later in the pregnancy.  With my first pregnancy, I gained 15 lbs total and i was quite small to begin with (5'2" 100lbs pre-pregnancy).  With this pregnancy, I am 20 weeks and I have not gained any weight.  I have basically followed the same diet I followed when I was pregnant with GD the first time around though.  I don't know if that has anything to do with NOT developing GD this time around, but I'd like to think that it does!
