How are early bedtimes coming?

My daughter decided about four days ago to flip to an early bedtime. We were starting her routine around 7 and it usually took a good hour or two to get her down. I was having her nap around 5 or 6 but noticed she was immediately cranky after this nap so started her bed routine at 6. She's fallen asleep faster (still takes a good 45 minutes for her to be totally out). All four nights she's woke up around 11 or midnight and then again at 3. After 5 she is either up or very restless. These night wakings are the same as before.

I was surprised that she made the switch so suddenly! Kinda nice having some time at night. Anyone else's LO decide it's time for early bedtimes now?

  • LO goes to bed no later than 8, usually around 7:30. It's nice to have down time in the evenings. Our older son goes to bed by 8 as well, so we normally have a couple hours of blissful silence :)

  • My dd is still on a "sleep and eat when she wants to" schedule. She naps random throughout the day and then usually has her last bottle between 8 & 10pm and then sleeps for the night until 6-8am. I dont mean to take over this thread but this got me thinking... should I try and get her on more of a schedule? She is 12 weeks and 1 day. TIA for any advice!

DS is becoming a new child! After weeks of fussiness and horrible sleep and now with Gerber soothe drops, milk elimination, and colic calm he is going to bed between 6-7 and sleeping for 5-6 hours (after that it's about every hour...but it's a million x better than before!!). It's glorious! DD goes down between 7-8 so I have me time!!

Today DS had bad naps at daycare so he even fell asleep in the swing around 5:30 and only roused a little when I changed him for bed.

  • We put ds down for naps either when he's tired or at the hour and half mark. If he gets mad then we try again at the 2 hour mark.

He's been consistent with bed time though. He's bathed changed and dressed in pjs by 830 and ready for his feed by 9 or so. He's down between 9 and 10 depending on how he goes. Then he's up for 9.

I personally don't mind this nighttime but maybe having him to bed for 8 and up for 8 would be better but I'm fine with how things are atm. His last nap is around 7 to 730 so maybe if I eliminated that he would go down for 8. I could try. But I really don't want to fix what isn't broken.
  • DS goes down around 7:30 but if we let him sleep he'll wake up around 4 so we do a dream feed around 10 and he sleeps until 7ish. I'd love to get rid of the dream feed at some point.

  • We used to have a great bed time routine and it's been flipped upside down by DS. He takes like 3 cat naps during the day and I think is very overtired by the end of the night but still fights going to sleep. He goes down about 8ish and sleeps till about 2-3 but the past 2 nights will not go back to sleep after that feeding. He's been super fussy. Wonder weeks says it's a leap and I'm hoping it's over soon and we get back on track. I go back to work in 2 weeks and I need my sleep!

Do you work or SAH? If I stayed at home, I don't think I would worry about a schedule. But for me, working and knowing when I need to be in bed and when I need to be up, getting on a schedule is very helpful. We are still on a loose schedule of eating just about every 3 hours, he stays awake for a while then sleeps for a while. Start the cycle over again. But bedtime is very consistent for us and I like it that way.

To answer the "should I start" questions...I guess if I had something working really well and my LO was getting long stretches I wouldn't change it until LO indicated change was needed or you knew it wouldn't work in the future. I want my LO to have a 6ish bedtime because she needs to get up at that time for daycare so in anticipation of eventually having 11-12 hrs of night sleep this is our goal. I read somewhere you should try for a bedtime between 6-8pm with 12 hrs between bed and wake. We'll see what happens. I still very much consider her to be in the lead and I'm the follower for a couple months yet before sleep training. (With my first we didn't have a super set bedtime or less night wakings until we did sleep training and I plan to do the same with her).

Edited for sleep training comment clarification.

Same here. I go back to work on Monday and will be dropping her off at daycare between 7/7:30 am. As of now, DD falls asleep between 9-10pm. She will sleep until 5:30/6 and then fall back to sleep after eating until 9/10am.
Ugh. I'm dreading getting up early again. I've loved lounging in pjs and "sleeping in".

  • She used to go down between 8pm and 9pm but the last week she's eliminated her evening nap and now goes down at 7:30pm. She usually sleeps until 7:30am. Funny enough, when she went to bed at 8:30pm, she would get up at 6:30am or 7am. The early bedtime seems to be agreeing with her and it just happened naturally going off her cues.
  • DD goes to bed at 8. She eats around 4 and then is up for the day around 7. This will be fine when I go back to work on Tuesday. Yikes!

  • DD seemed to bump her own bedtime up earlier. Friday and Saturday nights were we out later and so she didn't go down until closer to 9 pm (usually down around 8) and still woke at her usual time. This week she's been showing she's tired about 10-15 min earlier each night and still waking up at her usual time of 7ish. In general it seems following her cues is best. Whenever i "try" to do something I "should" be doing it comes out an epic fail.
  • Brooke gets her last bottle between 8-9:30 and is asleep around 10-11pm and she sleeps until anytime after 9:30am. Sometimes she's awake and is just laying in her crib talking to herself so I let her be until she starts crying. The one night she didn't go to sleep until after 11:30pm and slept until 11:20am. She loves her sleep- but we really don't have her on a schedule.

  • LO is in bed by 630-7 depending on how his last nap went. Today he was in bed by 615 because his last nap he woke up by 4 so he was ready. He will sleep til about 615 or so.
  • Early bedtime. Pffffftt. DD goes to bed no esrlier than 11. I gave up trying to fight it weeks ago.

  • I decided to change DDs bath time to 6:30p instead of 7p this week in hopes of starting an earlier bedtime. Problem is that the baths seem to energize her. Also, between DH not understanding how to speak at a low volume and a dog that barks at everything, my efforts have been unsuccessful thus far.
  • I feel your pain @thefussybunch‌

DH does not get that concept either. Or not slamming doors. Or not slamming toilet seat down. But, hey, at least he puts it down.

This! It's only been a couple nights with early bedtime but we're already finding that he naps better during the day and he's in a better mood.

  • I have no idea what to do here either! Previously ds went to sleep around 9 and would sleep in his rock n play til 530-630. We wanted to transition to crib so the first few nights down between 830-9 and he woke up around 2-3 am, rock him back to sleep and put him in the rnp til 7-8 am! Awesome :) well the last couple nights he's now waking up at 1130 pm and then rnp til 6-7 am :( no clue what happened! Thinking if I should start an even earlier bed time? I've been shooting for 830 bc I feel he gets cranky then but maybe I need to get him down before that so at 8? Ugh :( we really thought he'd just sleep longer first stretches in the crib til we got him to sttn in there. Any thoughts ladies?

  • My dh wants dd used to noise so she learns to sleep through everything. I want the same thing too but not at 11pm when I've had a long day and dont want to risk her waking up.
  • I'm super jealous of all the babies sleeping 10 or 12 hours! My guy goes to bed between 9-9:30. Used to sleep till 5 or 6 but recently he wakes at 3 then again at 6-7. According to the app, he is going through a leap so that would explain this. I go back to work today so I need to get more sleep! And I told DH the old "I can't wake up more than once because I have to work" won't fly anymore since I'll be working also. Too bad he doesn't have boobs
  • We start DD's bedtime routine around 6 and have her down by 7. She'll usually sleep until 12-1 then up again 3 hrs later. She's usually up for the day around 6. DH plays with her for a little then while I eat breakfast and then he's off to work. Wishing we could cut out a night feed soon. Or at least get her to nap by herself soon. She won't nap during the day unless she's on me. I've tried to get her to nap alone but just makes things worse. Maybe she's not ready yet.

This. She's been going to bed between 10-11 for over a month now. She sleeps till 6-7, nurses, then sleeps till 9-10.

I tried moving her bedtime to 9pm to start transition to an earlier time. Disaster. She woke up at 11 and wanted to play. I had to leave her in her crib playing with her feet for an hour before I could her to sleep again.

Luckily I'm a SAHM, so this schedule works for us. Maybe once she's sleeping 12 hours straight through we'll shoot for 8-8.

Those of you who have late bedtimes and LOs who sleep long stretches...I would not mess with that! DS only goes to bed early because it's what he does now. DD was the same way. It just happened. And even though we have an early bedtime we get 5-6 hours then 1 hour stretches...while it's heavenly compared to what we have had, if I could get more hours with a late bedtime I'd be on it! I'm all for going with what LO naturally does; it's usually chaos otherwise. At least in my house.
