bath time...the dirty details?

My lo loves bath time. Usually dh or I take a shower first so the room is all steamy and warm for lo. However I only give him a bath maybe twice a week using baby bath stuff ...I'm having a sleep deprived moment and can't think of the name. Anyway I follow this with baby lotion and he still always has peely skin. Is this to little? How many times do
you bathe your lo? How do you combat peeling?

Re: bath time...the dirty details?

  • The peeling is very normal.  DD2 is still peeling on her hands and feet.  We put aquaphor on it daily, but the pediatrician said the peeling will eventually go away.  We are bathing dd2 every 2-3 days and just using warm water.

  • Every 3-4 days here, though ds1 did them more weekly. I use a very little soap, but plain water works too. I don't use powder or moisturizers much at all.

  • We do a bath every other day mainly because I hate when she smells like spit up. She loves it too! She is 5 weeks old and the peeling on her hands and feet is pretty much done. I usually follow up with Babyganics body lotion to combat the dry skin she's inherited from me.

I bathe every night. Just trying to establish a routine with her. I bathe DS first and get him all lotioned up and dressed in jams. Then I have him 'help' me give sister a bath (stands and holds on the the side of the tub) while he watches and hands me her towel then I lotion up DD and put on her jams.

DS uses Sprout Original Shampoo (from the haircut place we go to) and Yardley oatmeal almond soap.
DD uses Shea Moisture Baby calming All-in-one shampoo and body wash
Both kids get lotioned with the Shea Moisture calming baby lotion

I bathe DD every other night and use lotion as needed - not all the time. She's been especially "peely" the last couple of days so I've been using it.
  • Every 3-4 days here, or whenever she stinks
Yeah, ditto.  The peeling will go away eventually.

  • I haven't done a real bath yet since his stump just fell off this weekend but I was doing sponge baths every 2-3 days. I only put a little lotion on the spots that seemed really bad but the pedi said usually by about a month the peeling goes away and that we didn't have to put anything on it.
  • Roughly weekly at the ped's suggestion, although I don't mind since he absolutely HATES his bath.  He screams like a banshee for the entire time and is completely inconsolable so it's a bit tough to even think about doing that to myself nightly.  The peeling just started to get a lot better and it's really just a little by his hairline right now.

  • Every 3 days unless he spits up a good amount. Never had to deal with peeling so i dont bother with lotion. Maybe i should be lotioning him?

  • Thank you ladies! Glad I seem to be in the norm!

  • We bathe every night to establish a routine but only use soap every other night to prevent drying out the skin. We tried 3 different lotions and love The Honest Company the best. I see a noticeable difference in her skin since switching. It doesn't smell great since it's fragrance free but it definitely works the best.

  • We are bathing like twice a week or whenever there's an "event".  If we have a party or something, he gets a bath, if he has a huge vomit, he gets a bath, etc.

We use the J&J yellow bottle of bath soap.  It's the same one they used in the NICU, so we figured it was good.

We are past the general peely skins and have moved into full fledged scaley cradle cap.  We'll use a little cetaphil lotion, but nothing else.

  • We bathe him every 3 days and don't use lotion.

Just as a FYI - don't pick at your kid's peeling skin. It can damage the new skin underneath.

  • My DD will be 5 weeks tomorrow! I just started bathing her every night a week ago to get her in some sort of routine. She likes her bath as long as it is warm. She tends to cry after the bath, so I nurse her a few minutes, then I put lotion on her and get her dressed, and it's back to nursing!

  • Usually 2-3 times per week. I don't bathe her at a specific time of day, but I do make sure I do it after she has pooped but before she eats again so she doesn't shit in the water. That's a mistake I'm only making once. Life lessons yo'.

So much this. Shitty bath water is the worst.

  • I've been giving (sponge) baths and/or quick showers with me about twice a week (when her hair gets really gross).  Now that her stump has (finally) fallen off, she is getting her first real bath today.

She's had very minimal peeling (around her ankles there was a little), so at 3w, should I be expecting more or assume that going to her EDD she shed her little snake skin in the womb?  I don't use lotion, I use either l'occitane or dr. brommer's lavender castile soap.
  • We rubbed olive oil into his ankles which took care of the peeling after two times. Don't think he's peeling elsewhere, more just milk crusties.
  • I just wanna say this cream had been an amazing purchase. Baby acne, dry patches, and cradle cap disappeared. My LO has very dry skin as well and I've used this on the dry spots only after baths and it has really helped.

We use calendula cream for diaper rash and it's amazing! Clears up almost instantly.
  • She's getting a bath about 3-4 nights a week. She did really good the last time & didn't cry! **takes bow** :D I use Johnson's shampoo/wash & their night time lotion on her. I don't rub the lotion under her chin(s) because it stays moist & stanky under there. I also use coconut oil as a lotion & diaper cream.

  • I bath him every day. Mostly because he likes it so much. The water calms him and he loves getting the lotion put on him. I use Aden + Anais. The lotion is nice and light. Lol bath time is Spa time for him basically so, I'm happy to do it every day. It's hard being a baby so, he deserves it ;)

But yea, the peeling will go away on it's own.

Ooh @mamakiss thanks for this recommendation! I've been dying to use something on his little infected looking baby acne spot on his cheek and wasn't sure what was safe to use. Just bought some Weleda calendula body cream for diaper rash tonight so I'll put a tiny bit on the spot and cross fingers it works like what you have!
