Shaken Not Stirred

So I can't remember who it was who posted about the milk fat on the bottle sides when they get home from work but I found this for you:

https://biomarkersandmilk.blogspot.com/2014/08/swirled-or-shaken-does-shaking-actually.html?m=1

Breastmilk is as it turns out is not so delicate as it's made out to be. And she doesn't even address my greatest fear: the air bubble. Maybe it really is a non-issue.

  • Swirling vigorously always worked for me.
  • I've always swirled, but I've never heard that you shouldn't shake.  The only reason I've swirled is I that I don't like to see the air bubbles on top.  It is just personal preference.

  • That makes me feel better. DH shakes it but bottles make up such a small part of her intake that I didn't think it was worth making him feel micromanaged to correct him. Personally, running water along the sides of the bottle has generally been enough to release the fat.

This is us too.  Glad to know that it's really not a big issue.

  • The surface of the milk is never broken or folded or splashed with swirling... hence the lack of air introduction. With shaking, you're mixing air and liquid into each other so you're manufacturing bubbles.

Swirling doesn't cause air bubbles, and I always assumed that the air bubbles were the sign of whatever bad happens when you shake.  I rub my thumb vigorously on the side of the bottle where the fat is and then hard swirl. I have never corrected daycare even though I see them shake since you gotta pick your battles.  Now I can just breathe and let that one go.

This is exactly what I do and it works just fine. Sometimes it takes awhile of there's a lot of fat built up but it's nbd.
  • I saw this on kellymom's FB feed. Interesting....but since I scald all my pumped milk, I don't even worry about this anymore. I'm already practically pasteurizing that shit. I think it can handle a little shakey shake. Mmmmm.....shaaaaaakkkee.

Okay here's a potentially stupid question... why is everyone worried about bubbles?

Not stupid. I wondered the same. I'd assume, bubbles= gas! but I'm not sure.

That's the reason?! I thought, since everything said swirl, DONT SHAKE!!!! that it somehow affected the quality of the milk...

Yes, it's been taught that way for years. Though I had a nursing school instructor who said the air would cause oxidation of the nutrients. Which yes it might, but if I'm prepping a bottle it's cause we're going to use it, not just let it sit about. But as the article explains, unless you're a prize fighter you wouldn't be able to shake hard enough to denature the proteins in human milk. That said I still don't shake because my DD2 vomits constantly and doesn't need anymore air.
  • This was posted in my EP Facebook group and everyone freaked out. It's so ingrained into people to swirl and not shake that they could not grasp the fact that they would not ruin their BM by shaking. Then we got to discuss that BM is not a living organism and it was okay to shake BM but not okay to shake a baby. People are crazy.

That is way off course. That's a non sequitur right?but BM is considered a living tissue which is why they screen BM like an organ donation, not just like blood donation.
