3rd Trimester

Measuring small

I am 33w5d and just had an appointment.  The dr said I am measuring small and wants me to have an US done.  I am worried that the baby is small, but she said it might be sideways, which I feel that the baby is.  She also told me I have gained extra weight in since my last appointment.  Overall, I am right on track for weight gain, but this was still disappointing to hear all around.  Just not a good appointment and feeling discouraged!

Very common, if you scroll down further on the page you'll see another post about it too.

With DS, around 36 weeks I started measuring smaller than previous weeks. They did an u/s, he had just dropped into my pelvis more. (They also told me he'd be about 6 pounds at birth, he was actually 7 lbs 15 oz.)

  • Thank you!  I have been looking at more info to reassure myself.  Hoping the US just shows the baby is ok :)
  • Measurements are not always accurate. I was told baby was small on several occasions. I went for a second opinion to a different doctor, and he measured the baby significantly larger!! The baby was also fine. As long as your placenta, blood flow, growth rate  etc are ok, a baby measuring small is nothing to worry about :)
  • I was always measuring small with my first. I ended up having her at 39 weeks and she was 6lbs 7oz. With this baby I'm the one measuring small and baby is in the 50th percentile and is very very squished. The US tech couldn't even get a good profile of her since she is so squished.
