Vegetarian Mamas

@Caer 's comment in the randoms reminded me I've had some questions in the back of my mind.

How are you introducing solids to LO?  Are you including meat?

I was a very strict vegetarian for almost 17 years, I began eating limited fish & chicken while TTC, pregnant, and pumping.  I'm back to full time veg now.  DH eats limited amounts of all meats.  I would like LO to eat meat as a child and make up his own mind when he is capable of making an informed decision.  So I would like to introduce meat to him (organic and humanly raised of course!   ;)   ).  I know now that if something I am feeding him has chicken and I lick it off my fingers it won't make me sick, but I am pretty sure beef would.  I guess DH will do all of those feedings?

Anyway, just wondering how others are handing this or anything else baby and meat related.

Edit to clarify: asking more out of curiosity, but advice is appreciated as well.

Re: Vegetarian Mamas

  • We're not vegetarians but we eat very little meat, so DD also eats very little meat.  And honestly she's never been a big fan of meat, and other moms of kids her age (turning 2 tomorrow) tell me that's normal.

What about using organic pouches that include meat with veggies?  That way you wouldn't have to handle or cook the meat.

  • My daughter will get fish and possibly chicken once in a blue moon. No red meat.
...I don't know if that was your question.

  • LO will be slowly introduced to meats (because of my allergies she may have gotten). But I doubt it will be a large proportion of her meals. We eat plenty of plant based proteins and iron rich foods, so I'm not worried about any missing vitamins, ect. We are cautious of dairy (both H and I are allergenic, not intolerant). She will get well aged non cow dairy to start with.

  • I didn't get sick when I reintroduced chicken or seafood.  However, I did get very sick a few years ago when I accidentally ate something cooked with pork. I assume beef would also make me sick. This is part of the reason I plan to introduce LO to everything.  Since DH does most of our cooking that part won't be an issue.  I think we will just make sure he does the feedings if it's meat related.
@Iowea1 : in answer to your question, I would do some research about how kids who only eat meat occasionally will react to it.  I would be concerned about their bodies handling it if they are not eating at least every few weeks.
