Breastfeeding

LO won't take bottled BM but will take formula bottles? HELP!

So my 3month old will not take breast milk in a bottle from anyone. It seemed as if she would gag or the flow was to much for her. I tried every type of slow flow bottle (Latch, Medela, Dr. Brown, Tommie Tippe, cheap Walmart brand, Evenflo, etc.). Before starting daycare she would not use a bottle from anyone. We tried everyday a month before daycare (baby led feeding technique from Kelly's mom) but with no success.

Daycare tried breast milk bottle feeding with no success. So, they tried formula (the 2oz infant newborn sample bottles), success with drinking 1-2oz each feeding . They tried giving her breast milk in the bottles and she screams.  The milk tastes fine. I hate the thought of her screaming but what can I do so she doesn't need to have only formula at daycare? She is a healthy size and no issues with BF. I can not go to daycare and feed her. Any ideas?

I BF my son till 18months and pumped for daycare. He had issue early on with bottles but nothing like this. Any suggestions?

  • It's the nipple. Try dumping the formula out of one of those sample bottles, rinse it out and put in breast milk. Betcha she will take it!

You need to find nipples that are the same or similar to the ones they used for the pre-made formula. Those 'disposable' nipples that come in a plastic package is probably what they're using, you CAN reuse those (per the nurses at the NICU where my son was) but also you can find something similar. You can put those nipples on any standard size (not wide-neck) bottle.

Also I will say I've tried some of those so called 'slow flow' nipples you mentioned and they are fire hoses. The MAM slow flow nipples are the slowest ones that I found.

  • Is the breastmilk warm enough? My LO likes her milk really hot (98.6 degrees!) I would also recommend trying the Lansinoh momma bottles.
