Short version: We are team green turned blue! Our son was born at 1:33
AM on 7/28 (his due date) weighing 7lbs, 8oz and 20 inches long. He is
absolutely adorable!!
Long version:
I started having some contractions on Friday afternoon at work. They were about 10-15 minutes apart and
pretty irregular, but I decided to bail and head home. Naturally, on
the way home, the contractions stopped altogether and stayed gone all
night. Saturday morning, since it looked like nothing was happening, I
decided to go wedding dress shopping with my sister, out to lunch, walk
around the mall, etc. After that, I went home, walked the dog, washed
and vacuumed the car, ran a bunch of errands, including to Babies R Us
to pick up a few little things. On the way home, I started having a
couple of contractions again - but I sort of put it out of my mind.
Around 9 or 10PM I started really feeling the contractions and asked DH to
time them. By 10:30 they were 3-4 minutes apart. We went back and
forth about calling the hospital because although the contractions were
less than 5 minutes apart, I hadn't been in labor very long. Finally,
after a trip to the bathroom and a bunch of blood on the TP, we decided
to call and head into L and D.
They assessed me at 4-5cm
and well on my way. They admitted us and got the antibiotics going
since I was GBS+. At this point, I was handling things pretty well and
confident that since we were already so far along, I'd be able to have
the med free birth I had hoped for - I was thinking we would have a baby
by breakfast time -ha! I labored in our room for several more hours,
on the birthing ball, in the shower, etc. DH must have sprayed my back
in the shower for hours! Finally around 10 or 11AM on Sunday I asked to be
checked again, just to see where I was at. I was at 5! WTF?!?!? I
started getting kind of discouraged here because the contractions were
2-3 minutes apart for hours and soooo strong. DH and all of the nurses
were totally in support of my plan to go med-free and were so
encouraging. I decided to stick it out. They checked me again around 3
or 4 in the afternoon and I was at 7-8 with a bulging amniotic sac.
They wanted to break my water, but warned me that the contractions would
get more intense at that point. I was already so completely frayed, I
decided that it was time for an epidural. For what it's worth, I hear
lots of stories about hospital staff pushing drugs and intervention, but
in this case, every single member of the care team asked to make sure I
was sure I wanted to proceed with the epidural at that point - they
were really committed to helping me stick to my original plan. That
said, I was more than ready for the epidural. Epidural in, they came
and broke my water and found a good amount of meconium. They were
pretty calm about it, but I started to get anxious now and pretty much
would have gone with any plan to get the baby out asap. I went back to
7cm after my water breaking, because apparently the sac was pushing my
cervix open. They started pitocin, and with the epidural in, even
though there was a window on one side where I could still feel the
contractions, I felt like I got to rest for a couple of hours - and it's a
good thing!
Around 10PM I started pushing. 3.5 hours
later with baby's head turned to the side, they decided to do an
episiotomy and vacuum assisted delivery. I wound up with a 3rd degree
tear in spite of the episiotomy. Holy yowch! But out came our
beautiful baby boy! I cried, DH cried, I couldn;t believe he was finally here! Due to the meconium, the doctors whisked DS away to
the other side of the room to suction and clean him out, but he was
pretty much wailing the whole time. A few minutes later they brought
him over to me to do skin to skin and he started nursing almost right
away. And he also pooped again, all over me - nice that they put a hat on him but no diaper, lol. He was 7lbs, 8oz, and 20 inches long.
