Pumping for 8 Mo Old

Suddenly since AF returned and DS started more solid foods, I've really noticed a decrease in my pumping output.  I'm working on getting my supply higher so I can produce more per pump, but on days I'm home and nurse, DS doesn't drink enough to keep it up.  I know how to increase my supply, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to quit nursing to do it, at least during the day.  What does your nurse/pump routine with an infant who eats more solid foods? TIA

Re: Pumping for 8 Mo Old

  • i cut back to 2 pumping sessions a day once my DS started taking in a good amount of solids- at about 7/8 months. i wasn't getting enough from the 3rd pumping session to justify it, so i dropped it. i got maybe 2 ounces less per day with just the 2 sessions. for a while i used some of my freezer stash to make up part of the third bottle. then DS stopped taking the 3rd bottle, and i started sending solids to DC instead. i always nursed on demand when i was home with him nights/weekends and i didn't have any issues with keeping up my supply. so, you could consider cutting a pumping session at work. (many women stop pumping at work at 1 year, so you could cut back to 2 sessions for a few months, then go down to 1 for a few months, before stopping completely.)

  • How much solids should he be eating?  He usually has 12 or 18 oz of milk while I'm gone, and he still nurses at night.  I think if I pump every couple of hours at home there won't be enough milk to nurse.

I can't figure out if there is something wrong with my pump, or if I just don't have any oversupply right now and that's why I can't pump enough for 2 bottles at work.
  • I've never heard of the power pumping, but I could definitely try that. 6 ounce bottles are too much? I bumped it up when he started waking hungry at night, but he doesn't always drink it all. I figured my supply had regulated, but it seems like so little to get three ounces when I could pump six or eight multiple times a day for six months.

So basically my supply is right on but I need to add extra pump to make up for the difference? And send five ounce bottles?
