Depression. Where to start?

Dh has been in a "funk" for quite some time. There's a few factors (work, his family) that have contributed to this, but it's just been getting worse and worse. He's become apathetic towards most things in his life and is pretty distant and grouchy lately. We had a big talk a couple weeks ago where we discussed the possibility that he may be depressed. I told him I really wanted him to talk to someone and try to get help. He told me last night that he's not sure where to start. He doesn't really want to go on meds, maybe just see a counsellor? I figured our family doctor would be the first step and maybe she could refer him to someone else? Any input on what his first step should be would be great!

Re: Depression. Where to start?

  • His general doctor.

He needs a physical to make sure there isn't anything else going on.

his dr can then prescribe medication and recommend a therapist or psychiatrist to go to.

    My DH suffers from depression.

  • Thanks guys. It has been rough but we're both feeling optimistic after finally talking about it. Dh didn't really understand how much his mood was affecting me and the kids.

  • Medication is definitely not the only option. Don't be afraid to "shop around" when it comes to therapists. A good one is worth the effort.

  • I'd say definitely go to a doctor. I went to one, after months of feeling horrid and I got on meds. He can go, make sure that nothing physically is wrong, and talk to his doctor about where to go from there. Likely, his doctor can recommend either support groups or a counselor that would be good for helping him deal with his depression.

I'm sorry you guys are going through this. DH and I have been having a rough couple of months because of problems with my depression, but we're getting there. It will get better! :)
