Kicked out of liquor store

I'm sure very few (if any) of you remember me. I was active early in our pregnancies but have been a lurking love titter for several months. (My apologies if I have a ticker that says I'm a thousand weeks pregnant. I tried deleting it months ago but it's a persistent little fucker.)

Anyway. I didn't think about the fact that LO was with me & offered to grab something from the liquor store for H while I was out. I've never tried taking her in, so I was a little nervous, but decided to go ahead since we'd be in & out quickly. I was loudly & harshly told to "get her out of here" as soon as we walked in. It was mortifying.

Isn't a breastfed infant allowed to go anywhere their mother is allowed to be? Am I making that up? Reaching? Do I even have the right to be upset here?! I really want to be able to tell that asshole he was wrong & we'll never give them our business again but I don't want to further embarrass myself.

@Turk721‌ I'm in Indiana & admittedly clueless about our liquor laws.

Ok, google is my friend. This is what I found re IN breastfeeding laws. If I could feed her there, she could obviously be there, right? Am I missing something?

    IC 16-35-6-1
    Right to breastfeed
Sec. 1. Notwithstanding any other law, a woman may breastfeed her child anywhere the woman has a right to be.

  • That's crazy! I wouldn't go back either. Even if the law says no one under a certain age, clearly an infant isn't going to drink any of it or break anything if you are holding her.
I've taken mine in liquor stores though not very often and never had a problem.

I'm confused, were you bf'ing her in the liquor store?  Or where you just running in to grab some booze and had LO with you, then told to leave?

Not that it makes any difference (just trying to understand what happened).  Either way I wouldn't be going back to that store.

Sorry for the confusion. No, I wasn't feeding her, just running in quickly. The reason I mentioned the breastfeeding law was because I was under the assumption she could go anywhere with me because she is breastfed. If I can bf in a liquor store, she can obviously be there, right? Maybe I misunderstood.

  • Wow I didn't realize other states were weird like that. I live in CA & that would never happen here I'm pretty sure.
  • LTHBLTHB member
    @Mac2588‌ I definitely won't be going back!

Usually if I am out and need to get liquor/wine/whatever, and I have LO with me, I just get it from CVS or a grocery store. I'm in Indiana as well. Would this be an option for next time?

Edit: If there is a Kroger (or Pay-Less) or Meijer near you, they have huge alcohol sections. You can get almost anything at those places that you can a liquor store. Plus, carts. No toting baby and booze at the same time and then fumbling for your money. I wouldn't boycott the liquor store because you think they are in the wrong, which they aren't. I'd just take a break for convenience.

  • Every state has different "weird" laws. Don't get the OP all riled up because that didn't happen to you in another state where you are allowed by law to bring a minor in a liquor store. OP, please don't "boycott" a place of business when you were in the wrong. Also like ErinO said, there are a bunch of other options to buy liquor

I just moved from IN. In Indiana no one under the age of 21 can enter or step foot in a liquor store. This includes your baby. They also cannot sit the bar area of a restaurant. Same thing. They were right to ask you to leave...they probably could've lost their license if anyone from the state had walked in. Sorry you have to get your Booze at the grocery store.
The bolded made me LOL (& feel like a bit of a lush!). I admittedly know nothing of our liquor laws, so thank you for the info.

I hate the special snowflake BFing thing...What does it have to do with anything since you WEREN'T BFing her?
I agree. I thought about how that probably came across after the fact.

I'd like to clarify for anyone who thought I was using BFing as an excuse. It was drilled into my brain when LO was born that I am allowed to BF anywhere I have the right to be. I have (obviously falsely) translated that to mean LO is allowed to go everywhere with me. That is why I brought up the BF law even though I was not there long enough to feed her. It was a misunderstanding on my part & I did not intend to come across as an entitled special snowflake.

I'm not riled up because it didn't happen to others. I'm very embarrassed. I was obviously in the wrong for taking her in, but the reason I will not be returning is because of the way it was handled. I tried to apologize & was yelled at to get out in a room full of people. I would think a business owner who cares about his customers might treat them with a little more respect.

  • I know that liquor laws vary quite a bit from state to state and often those laws are weird but I think it is a little odd that you can't bring an infant into a liquor store in Indiana but they sell liquor at the grocery store.  I grew up in MN where you can't buy liquor at the grocery store but we could go into the liquor store with my folks.  We liked going there because they always gave us those dum dum lollipops.

That reminds me, I am out of wine.

Yes, that's definitely a better option. I would typically grab it at Kroger or Target but neither had what H was looking for & this particular liquor store just got it in. Being in Indiana, are you familiar with 3 Floyds? A couple of the more popular beers are in grocery stores but our favorites (gumballhead & zombie dust) are not. H will just have to get it himself next time!

Thanks for your input, everyone. I was clearly in the wrong for assuming I could take LO in with me.

I still think that guy was a dick.

  • I'm in CO, and go to the same liquor store all the time. At first I was nervous thinking, can bring my LO in here? But the guy helped me bring my booze out to the car since my hands were full and does it every time. Sorry that happened to you. I would've been mortified too, and you didn't know!
  • I never would've put it together that I wouldn't even be able to take DD into a liquor store. I live in MN and agree that liquor laws are so strange sometimes and weird how they're all different. I've probably brought DD into liquor stores before--can't even remember now. How awkward for you! I am surprised no one else in the store told the guy to calm down if other people witnessed it.

I'm not familiar with 3 Floyd's. Does the maker of it have a website where you can locate a retailer?

3 Floyd's is a brewery here in Indiana. If you're a beer drinker you have to try it! Several local grocery stores carry their beer but a few of our favorites are hard to come by & only available at certain liquor stores. Oh well, I know to send H next time!

  • Where I live in canada is if you don't have ID you can't even be in the liquor store. I was 19 and forgot my ID i was with my mom and still got kicked out.

Every place is different, but at least now you know :)

  • @LTHB We love 3 FLoyds!  Gumballhead is my husbands "desert island beer".  We used to go when I lived in Chicago - we've even been to Dark Lord Day.  Great food, great pub.  Unfortunately we don't get it too often now that we're not there and they've cut down on their distribution.  But anytime anyone we know sees some, they grab it for us ;)

Another 3 Floyds fan! So jealous you've been to Dark Lord Day...It never works out for us!
Gumballhead is my absolute favorite. I went today to grab Zombie Dust for my husband. With all their distribution issues we're rarely able to find it. You can imagine the "so close, yet so far" disappointment when I knew they had it & were kicking me out. LOL

  • I've never thought about it before either. I always figured I'd get the side eye if I tried. I'm not a big drinker so I would most likely be picking up DH something. If it's the law so be it.

I thought of this for the first time, last week, when I had Emma with me and needed to grab some beer for a party. I was nervous until I saw a sign on the door that said "no one under 21 allowed inside, unless accompanied by an adult".
Emma held the pizza while I grabbed the beer. :)
