Choroid Plexus Cysts

Had our big u/s yesterday at 17 wks - 2 girls!!! (Di/di) Super excited and loved seeing them on u/s for so long.

Twin A - has an awkwardly positioned placenta - so they're keeping an eye on that. Measurements put not right on track at 17wk - give or take a day or two.

OB called after I left notifying me the perinatologist reviewed u/s and BOTH babies have Choroid Plexus Cysts on brains. Cysts themselves are benign , but could be a marker for chromosomal abnormality (Tris 18 or 21)

Of course I have some fear, but as far as I could tell & was told, everything else looked great in the u/s.

Anyone with this experience?

Next u/s is Sept 15th - I'll be getting growth u/s every appt from here on out.

Re: Choroid Plexus Cysts

  • Simon (my baby A) had two of them sometime in the second trimester but he had no other markers. Both cysts shrank down and eventually disappeared completely during the 3rd trimester. Jamie (baby B) didn't have any. If your girls don't have any other markers, they will probably resolve and become something you never even think about :)

  • We didn't have any detected on our A/S but when our babies were born early they had to have brain u/s to make sure there were no bleeds. Our girl had one in her brain and we were told its common and they often disappear. We never even needed it rechecked.

  • My girls both had two of these cysts and it really worried me. They went away within a few weeks of my fingding out about them and everything was fine. My doctor told me they are common to see because as a twin mom you have so many early ultrasounds, they are usually not concerned unless they see other markers. I remember the ultra sound tech was checking my girls hands to see if they were claw like as this combined with the cyst may indicate trisomy 13. Its hard not to worry but if it makes you feel any better, my MFM told me he wishes he didn't even have to tell people about them because they are common and almost all of the time resolve on their own.

  • Thanks ladies for the input and reassurance - after researching, I believe all will turn out great! Just strongly dislike that they even have to tell ya in nothing more is seen!

And, having to wait till 9/15 for another u/s is torture!

  • They saw one on DD2 and I freaked. What they said was that it was her only marker, but it was there send even if it went away- it had been there. My docs were very confident that bc it was her only matter, she would be fine- and she is! She is totally perfect!, My doc said that US are so much better quality than they were years ago and they are able to detect CPS on many more babies, whereas years ago, they only detected severe cases.

  • My B had that at 18w.  I didn't have another u/s until 24w, it was gone then.  My OB said it was a marker for T21 but that he'd never seen it be T21 with just that 1 marker, normally if they had an abnormal heart of umbilical cord along with the cyst, but never in 30 years with just the cyst alone.

  • I am an ultrasound tech, and both of my twins had the cysts. It is very common, and as long as there are No other markers they will be fine!
  • we found out during our first pregnancy that our baby had one.  they found it during the AS at 20 weeks.  i had a sister who passed away from trisomy, so i was pretty darn panicked about it.  even with a family history of trisomy, my doctor was super calm about it  he didn't recommend any further testing and he told me it was nothing and that my baby would be perfect..  she is a perfect (almost) two year old.  sharp as a tack.  we never had it retested.  no idea if it went away or what, but i would try to not worry about it.
