Crib right away?

Hello
Ladies I not due for a other couple of months but I have started to prepare for the twins. We bought two cribs and was wondering if they babies start right away in the cribs or if it's better to buy those bassinets and have them in our room. I am very confused. I saw some people me mention a playpen with two attached bassinets on top. Is that what you used? Or planning on using? I think I would feel more secure if the babies are with me in the room for first bit but unsure what practical ! All your advice is appreciated!!

There will be a variety of responses to this, and really the only "right" answer is what works for you (and is safe, obv). That said, we did put the boys in their own cribs from the first night they came home. It worked well for us. They slept just fine in their cribs (I mean, for newborns lol), and their room was just a couple yards from ours so I didn't feel like they were terribly far away. It was nice having their whole set-up there (changing station....we even put a mini-fridge in there so I could access bottles easily and store pumped breastmilk w/o having to go downstairs to the kitchen) and we didn't need to deal w/ a difficult transition to their cribs since they were used to it from the start.

Like I said, though, that's what worked for us! Plenty of ladies on here use RnPs at first or other set-ups and that's what works best for them.....there are lots of options!

  • With my singletons I always had a bassinet in our room for the first 3 months. We have a new house and two bassinets in our room is a bit tight so we are considering starting them off from day 1 in their cribs. Their room is literally 4 steps from ours so I'm getting more comfortable with the idea. If not, I can make 2 bassinets work. I think it just depends on what you're comfortable with. I'm uncomfortable with them sleeping together and with the rock n plays used at night. So that limits my options for space. It just depends on what you want to do and what your room/house layout is.
  • It is recommended you sleep in the same room with baby in the beginning, although personally I don't put a ton of weight on that. It is, however why most singletons sleep in bassinets in the parents room but that's very hard with twins. We tried it. After day 2 home we went right to the crib and I set up a temporary bed in the nursery and slept there at night for the first few months. I loved being in their room and it made MOTN stuff way easier. I recommend you have a few options ready to go and just figure out what works when you bring them home.

  • Thanks for your replies! These will be our first children. So lots to learn and figure out. So for the ladies who put the babies in their own rooms did you just keep the baby monitor close to you. I am generally a light sleeper and their nursery won't be too far from our room but I am nervous what if I can't hear them.
  • We don't have room in my bedroom for 2 bassinets so they will be in their room from the beginning. It's literally 5 steps away and I'll use a monitor. This is my plan anyway!!

  • All of my kids went in their room right away. I thought we would room share, but it wasn't what worked.

My oldest went right into his crib. The twins slept in rock n plays for 6-7months and then switched over to separate cribs.

  • Ours are 4 months old, and we have rnp by the bed in our room. We also EBF, and I don't want to end up sleeping in A different room than my husband, do what works!!

  • We opted to have them both in their cribs. We have a futon in the nursery and slept there until the second baby came home (less than a week). We did try moving them to our room in RnPs (no room for bassinets in ours) and no one slept well so they went back to the cribs. As PP said, every little noise from them would wake me up and then I'd be turning on the light to check them and so they weren't sleeping well either. Their room is right next door to ours.

  • We are putting the twins in their own room right away...  next to that room there is a guest bed I can sleep in if I dont want to be across the house or want to nurse.  My husband has a stressful job and will have to sleep so putting them in our room isn't an option.

  • We used their cribs (shared until 3 months) from the very beginning for nighttime sleeping.  Naps were in the rock n' plays.

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
  • We used the graco double bassinet pack n play. We had it in our room. It was a lot easier to have them right by my side of the bed so I could sooth them back to sleep if they were fussy or wanted their pacifiers. Night time feedings was a lot easier having them so close also.
We didn't switch them to their own cribs in the nursery until they were sleeping a good 8 hour stretch at night.
I had them in separate cribs. Even if we did have them share one crib it might not have worked too well. One or the other would fussy and we didn't want the other to wake up.
Once we weaned them off of being swaddled, they would throw their arms around so I was glad that they weren't used to being in the same crib.
Now that they are 6 months, my daughter flips and turns all around in her crib. My poor son would never get any sleep.
Try different places out and see what works for your little ones and for you. Being as close to them at night is a huge help.
