NIP, two women who amazed me

We were on a mini vacation at Dutch Wonderland in PA over the weekend and while the grandparents and DH went off to take DS1 on more rides and DS2 got fussy. They do have two nursing rooms in the front of the park (very family friendly!) but I didn't want to bother trudging all the way there and back. It was pretty nice cool weather so I found a bench under a shady tree and started to nurse DS2 under a cover (I just don't have the guts to do it without, I'm chicken). After a minute an Amish woman with a baby sits down on a sunnier bench and then looks at me and walks over to the shady bench next to mine and sits down and starts nursing. After another minute a bunch of other Amish people came over to her (kids and adults) came over her and were talking to her while she was nursing (without a cover). She was nursing from the opposite side I was on but I was dying to get a look to see how her outfit worked and if you could see anything because she didn't hike up her dress but I didn't want to stare. Amish people are very modest but I guess NIP is no big deal for them, she could have used the nursing room if she wanted. I really wanted to talk to her before her family came over but wasn't sure if she'd want to converse.

Another woman was holding what I thought was a sleeping baby while getting out of a boat and then I realized she was just walking around the park while nursing, holding the baby with one arm against her with her top shirt pulled up and a nursing tank underneath. I have no idea how she did that as well! I couldn't nurse while walking around with a baby. I was talking to her while waiting for another ride later and she was telling me her baby just liked to eat constantly (she was already 4 months old, so not a tiny baby!).

I feel inspired by them, but still not bold enough to nurse without a cover. Well, I did once only while riding on a tandem bike/buggy thing on the boardwalk while wearing a nursing dress.

Nice! I realized (as I was pumping milk in an a busy airport) that there must have always been women NIP or pumping in public and I just never noticed them before because I wasn't looking for them. Just as all those busy travelers were walking right past me or even looking at me without actually noticing or realizing what I was doing. Though I had a lovely chat with a women in her 70s and her husband about breastfeeding while I was pumping in the Toronto airport. They just acted like it was NBD.

I always admire women like this. When DD was just a little thing, a good friend of mine and I went to this little tea room in our neighborhood. We both had babies so when we needed to nurse, we took out our covers and did so. The owner was the sweetest lady who really catered to her customers. She came around and told us not to be modest..take the covers off if we wanted to do so. We ultimately didn't, but she told us how in her native country, nursing was no big deal. Women gathered together and nursed their babies and nobody was bothered -- in fact it was expected. And they received the support they needed from each other. It always stuck with me.

I love this, thank you for sharing! This past weekend DH and I had a busy day shopping for a new car, meeting my parents for lunch, then going grocery shopping... I've never NIP before, I was always chicken and would bring a bottle in case DS got hungry. I ended up nursing him at the dealership, in a very busy Denny's while eating, then in Walmart with my nursing cover! It was so much easier than bottle feeding him and people were so nice about it. I'm so glad I finally did it

great stories! I love reading them.

I've nursed on a few beaches this summer, a couple times without a cover and a couple of times with a cover-- depending on how busy the beach is. People might notice but no one has said anything to me yet.

I also nurse at my LO's daycare at lunch and I just sit in the nursery. The other day a maintenance man came in-- when he saw me nursing he said he could come back and I replied, "I'm just feeding my kid. It doesn't bother me that you're here." He came in, did his job and left. I'm not trying to make a statement-- I'm just trying to feed my baby.

Thanks for sharing everyone! I remember an older woman thanking me and telling me to keep up the great job while nip when ds2 was tiny. It melted my heart and helped me push through some of the nursing struggles we were having. now I try to smile and say something similar now when I see someone nip.

I have NIP at an indoor water park when DD was probably 7 month old. It was empowering. I also did what PP did and nursed at her daycare in the baby room. I miss those days when she was so little.

Great stories! I NIP'd this week while LO was in the Ergo 360 performance carrier. It has this great little hood that unzips out , presumably for rain protection or something. But it was just enough fabric to cover LO's head while she nursed. One could only see my boob from the side and really only if someone were struggling to look. I now love that carrier as it allowed hands free nursing so I could still sightsee around the city.
