High chairs and booster seats

Just curious if anyone has started to make the transition out of the high chair to the booster seat at the kitchen table. My mom has made several comments to us lately about DS needing to start learning how to sit at the table. In his high chair we bring it closer to the table to face us---but haven't had him sitting at the table to use the table to eat off yet. Partly because it's just easier to have him in the high chair. At daycare he sits at the little table and eats. He has table manners--outside of throwing his food on the floor if he absolutely doesn't want it, or occasionally feeding his peas and such to the dog. (not that it is encouraged.)

What are you all doing for meal time?

Re: High chairs and booster seats

  • We are still using the high chair but DD is a shorty so not sure she could really use the table anyway.

  • We have considered moving DD because she has expressed interest but because we have a hightop table I am nervous to make the move yet.  Also because I usually get things done while she is eating (put away dishes, etc) I am not ready to move her because she would have to be better supervised.

  • We have a Stokke Tripp Trapp and don't use the tray. He's sat at the table with us since as soon as he was able to sit up, and has always eaten off the table. I would imagine this is messier than having a tray with lips or edges to contain his food, so be prepared for that when you transition!

  • I know a few moms of 2 year-olds who say their child will not stay at the table and barely eats due to running around.  I don't want that battle.  M tries to get out of her high chair but she cannot.  She'll stay in until she no longer fits, has a huge fit every time when we put her in, or maybe in 7 months when the new baby needs it.
  • Our high chair seat transitions to use on a regular dining room chair, so I thought of moving it to one of our dining chairs so he feels more like he is actually eating with us. My only concern is will be be able to get out now that the tray is gone (we haven't used the shoulder straps for a year now)...or will he push against the table and push the chair back and tip over? Of course we are right there unless I'm cleaning up and just a few steps away in the kitchen. We also have a high top table, I'd honestly like to put it in our recreation room in the basement and buy a new dining room set that is normal table height.

  • We transitioned to a booster at the table before DS turned 1 (I forget when). He is strapped in so he can't get down and run around. He did push off the table and tip himself backwards once so we moved the table closer to the wall so he couldn't tip. Also I would get a pad or thick placemat if you have a wood table - DS loves to bang it with a fork. He destroyed our old table, luckily we were getting a new one (with a pad) anyway. DS hated his high chair so it's worked for us, I don't think it's any messier. Good luck!
  • @natt1230‌ do you have a placemat you can recommend that is another worry of mine. I really don't want my table destroyed.

  • T is completely capable of sitting in a chair or booster and eating at the table; however, the fact if the high chair restraining him makes me keep him there. We would never last at a restaurant in a booster! He'd be running like a crazy man. We can and have just sat him at the table for dinner at home, but I tend to still do the high chair so I can finish a few tasks while he eats.

We bought the Fisher Price Healthy Care booster seat last summer as a travel highchair, and we loved it so much that we stopped using our big highchair and just use this all the time. It's inexpensive and straps onto a chair, but it has a tray also. I usually have DD pulled up to the table but with the tray on because it keeps food off of her lap and is a better height for her than the table, but if it's just a dry snack I might skip the tray. The booster seat still has straps so she can't get out of it. I wish we had just gotten this from the start and never bought the big highchair.

This. We have the same chair and don't use the tray so she has been sitting at the table with us since 6 months old.
