Breastfeeding

Reglan

Has anyone been prescribed this? Did it increase your supply? Did you have any negative side effects? I am currently only getting a total of 1 oz of breast milk per pumping session every 3 hours. The doctor prescribed it at my request but warned me that it increases the chance of post partum depression so I am on the fence for picking up the prescription. Your experiences are much appreciated. TIA.

Re: Reglan

  • Yes. I've tried 9 capsules of Fenugreek and 9 capsules of blessed thistle daily. I've tried pumping every three hours, and increased it to every two hours. I've tried pumping for upwards of 30 minutes a session. I've tried drinking as much water as I can take and eating a lot of protein, in addition to oatmeal for breakfast. None of it has helped. :-(

Try Domperidone (must be ordered online as it is not FDA approved in the US for stupid reasons). Reglan has far too many negative side effects for my taste.

I took fenugreek, ate oatmeal for breakfast, ate lactation cookies, stayed hydrated, and took Dom (which I have a bix and a half of left if you want to buy it from me).

  • @CNYBride05, does domperidone require a prescription?

  • Try breast compressions. Google 'hands on pumping'. It really helped me. Also, try pumping every  2 hours or 10-12 times per 24 hour period (space out pumps a bit more at night if you want and try to keep them 1.5 hours apart).

You didn't say why you are pumping instead of nursing, but nursing or even attempting to (if say you have a preemie or a baby with latch issues) will really help your supply as will skin to skin contact with baby. Google 'kangaroo care'.

Domperidone has to be ordered from pharmacies in Australia or Canada or somewhere like that because it's not FDA approved here. I've read that you can get it from a compound pharmacy in the US if you have a prescription, but that may have changed as the FDA is cracking down on it.

Reglan can also cause facial ticks I think. My OB told me to steer clear of it because of the depression.

  • No. But you have to order online and it takes a few weeks to get.

  • I haven't used supplements such as these, but I believe domperidone is a better choice.  I know several people personally who have had excellent results, without the risk of post-partum depression.

  • I've been able to EBF twins thanks to Dom after my milk didn't come in due to retained placenta. Once I had a d&c, my milk came in very minimally and then I added Dom and got my kids off formula supplementation and am still BFing now at almost 13 mos. So worth it for us!
