Just got hired for a new job, when should I discuss my pregnancy

Ok first of all let me say thank you all of welcoming me onto this board.

I recently interview for a position at a hospital billing department here and offered the position which pays a substantial amount more than what I get paid at my current job, offers all benefits from day 1 and while I wouldn't be eligible for FLMA because Baby Bumblebee is due only 6 months after I start there I still have the ability to get STD while I'm out. Which personally I would be crazy if I didn't take it.  My only concern is, even through I wont be working directly in the hospital they require ALL employees to have a physical to make sure they can see, hear, etc and are healthy to do the job.  I wasn't planning on telling them until later on after I really started showing (I'll be 12 weeks on Friday and just have a blump that's easily camouflaged).  What should I do?? Should I tell them or just hope nothing comes up with the "Is there any change you could be pregnant?" comes up.

This is an awesome opportunity for go from being a Paralegal with 10 years of experience making entry level salary to being able to not to have a pot to piss in to making some good money, being able to take care of my little one and have insurance that I'm not struggling to pay.

  • Ladies any advice???

  • Tell them when you're ready to. Legally, they can not ask you if your pregnant - no matter how obvious it might be.

  • Ok. I was wondering about that, and if they ask in the physical should I just say no. I feel bad about say No to having this awesome blessing growing inside me.  I seriously hoping they don't ask at all.
  • How far along are you ?

Why are you worried about telling them?

Is there a probation period during which they can fire you without having to state a reason?

It sounds like a good thing so I'm not sure what the problem is. If you're not ready to tell them, don't. Tell them when you feel like it. Unless there is something in particular that you are worried about and want advice about.
  • I don't think there's any reason to lie about it during the physical.

You said that they are making sure that you can "see, hear, etc and are healthy to do the job" - being pregnant has nothing to do with any of that unless there are chemicals or heavy lifting etc. So only the necessary details will be released by the Dr. to you new employer.

You could always ask the Dr. during the physical what information will be provided to the employer.

  • I just went through the same situation. 4weeks ago I quit my job and moved to Indiana for my husband's job. I had a job interview at a local hospital and didn't mention being pregnant. HR called and offered me the job and said I needed to go through a physical. I started sweating and really worried. I told HR since it will probably will come out in the urine test and bloodwork. She told me that she would let the office manager know but she didn't see an issue with this. I start on the 18th. I can completely side with you on being anxious and nervous. I can only tell you my story and hope it helps you at all. Good luck!! T&P!!

I will be 12 weeks on Friday.  Because they make you do a physical before you start.  I work in an at will state so they can fire you at any time.  There is a 6 month probation period where you have to be at work every day and not call in.  I accept the job, my main concern is having to tell them when I go for the physical and in essence telling them before I'm ready too.

That is true. Maybe that is what I will do, when I go in just ask them what are they looking for exactly in the physical and what information will be given to the employer.

  • Thank you all again for your advice.
  • Oh, a 6 month probation period is crazy scary! That us totally worth being anxious about.

Hopefully the pp's story helps calm you a bit.

Personally, I wouldn't tell them. Not even the doctor. The doctor won't know unless they do a urine or blood test specifically for pregnancy, which I'm willing to bet isn't done and is illegal. Or, if they do a pelvic exam, which you can simply refuse as it sounds unnecessary.
  • I'd wait until I built up friendships and relationships at work and then tell them, once they can't imagine working without you! ;-)

Ps: congrats on the new gig !
  • I think if it was me I would be up front about it before leaving your current job. If they have issues with it you'd know before leaving your current position. They obviously think you are talented enough for the job and they'd probably be more willing to work with you the more up front (not hiding it) you are. Its not like your 4 weeks along, you're virtually out of the 1st trimester. Good luck!

  • @Cogdis - thank you very much. That's a good idea lol.  Yeah it made me feel a little better and I think I only have to pee in the cup for the drug test. I would flip $hit if they wanted to do a pelvic lol.. this job doesn't not entail any of those parts of me lol.

@mandamoochie - that's an idea. I went on "Attorney Google" and read where it's illegal for them to take the job away from me after offering it to me because I'm pregnant.  I'm going to hold it in for as long as I can, at least til after training and I get into the swing of doing the work before I let them know. I also have a few family members who work there but they don't know I'm pregnant there are super extended family :)
  • @logahn4281‌ when I had to get a physical for my last job I went to the dr of my choice. It was typical height/weight/immunizations/blood pressure stuff lol

  • You could tell them when you meet with HR, maybe when you do all the physicals and stuff. They offered you the position in writing, right? Then they can't take it back, legally.

  • I'm going through something similar. I just got a job in June and didn't know I was pregnant till after I started. I ended up letting them know after I found out. Then just last week I got called for an interview for a county position I had taken a civil service test for. I ended up getting the phone call on Monday offering me the job if I wanted it. I let her know right then and there that I was pregnant. I wanted to be upfront with her and didn't want them to think I was hiding it from them. I still got the job.

I just feel bad telling the job I'm at now that I now have a new job starting September. However, I couldn't pass it up It pays me more than double what I'm making now with great health insurance.

Good luck and Congratulations on the new job!

Congratulations to you as well.  Our situation are really similar this job is an offer I really can't refuse. They offered it to me not even a week after I interviewed and I didn't disclose it during the interview because I didn't think that would be a good thing to do.
