Unimpressed with kindergarten mailing (vent)

We finally got our kindergarten info mailing from DD's future school. Info has been really sketchy all along--they had the wrong dates online for the early registration, no public info ever went out (you had to find it on your own), and they have a big welcome day on Aug 26 but just sent the info now. I think that's an important date and it would have been really nice for kindergarteners to have that info early. Anyway, we finally got this huge confusing mishmash of an info packet. In the main info page, the welcome night date is last year's date in two separate places. They obviously just updated last year's letter, badly. I went online today to use the new, required online access program to try to find out DD's teacher, and the login they provided does not work! I called the school and the principal asked me to call back again tomorrow for help. I'm just really annoyed. PLus, one of the three kindergarten teachers was just cited for causing damage to political signs after hours at a county fair. It made the news quite a bit b/c of our contentious Wisconsin politics. I'm wondering if she will end up suspended or something and then we'll have a sub, which would be a crappy way to start out kindergarten.

I know people like this school, but so far I am totally unimpressed and the interactions we've had thus far are not making me feel any better about DD starting kindergarten.

  • Wow that sounds like a train wreck!!

  • I'd be pretty unimpressed as well. Hopefully they get it together soon.
  • It's our local public school and we're in one of the best districts in the state. People like the school, from what I have heard, but this is a really rough start! does kind of make me wonder if we should have done Catholic school.

Meh, those Catholic school teachers can be just as wild....j/k....kinda ;)

I do hope things get better or that you're able to find an option you like better.....it does sound like an awful start and I would be disappointed too!

  • I didn't remember that you lived so close to me.

Our 4K registration was way back in January, and we had a meeting in May for parents which gave us a list of important dates. That's at a separate school though. (All 4K is in the same place, and there are 4 elementary schools in the district.)

At our elementary, we got a back to school letter with registration info in early July. We had registration last week and got a packet with info about upcoming dates (like back to school night) then.

You don't have public 4k, do you? I think some of dd2's friends from preschool are in your district and were trying to decide where to go this year. I feel like I had to really seek out the info when dd1 started 4k, but once she was registered, they were really good about communication. (And actually, I had to look up registration dates for dd2 also.) I would hang in there for now and expect things to get better.

  • @Angela, which district are you? Sussex?? MF? You are right, we don't have 4K. I loved DD's preschool, though. It was 3 mornings/week for 4K.

  • We're in Sussex. We've had great experiences with the schools. DD2 did summer school for 4K and is so excited to start school. She'll be going 5 days/week in the afternoons.

  • The summer mailing is not a reflection of the teachers' abilities or effectiveness. As a teacher myself, I promise you, the teachers are just as irritated when bad information is sent home to parents. While it was a poor first impression of the school, I think it's more important to see how they remedy the mistakes and help you get the correct information over the next few days.

I would not use it to judge the teacher yet. Chances are it is a front office issue. There were years that I was teaching that classrooms had no teacher on the first day of school. I am talking parents lined up outside a dark room and other teachers trying to welcome their own students, absorb/direct students from unmanned rooms, and answer questions from justifiably angry parents. It is not a reflection on the teachers, they are just as frustrated. If it continues, take it up with the front office, although sometimes their hands are also tied. In our case, it was a dysfunctional central office.

Because other schools don't make typos or have technical difficulties when rolling out new programs?

  • It's also not like yiu can just switch. Well, unless you mean go the private route, which I can't imagine most people are prepared to do at the drop of a hat.
And even if you have the $$ lying around for tuition, some schools have crazy waiting lists (at least the most popular Catholic school around here does).

I keep forgetting that school is still 3 weeks out....and am cracking up at the level of organization expected from any place, public or private.....at both my schools there were teachers who were hired two days before classes began almost every year....everybody still somehow survived....

  •  I used to teach at a school with a highly disorganized and incompetent front office staff. The mailings that the school sent out were so filled with typos and errors that our department sat down with red pens one time, made corrections, and submitted the document to our principal because it was so absurd and embarrassing.

I completely understand your worries and think your concerns are totally valid. But for your own sanity, I would wait and see what you think of your child's individual teacher before stressing too much. One of my grade-level colleagues was terminated for having an inappropriate relationship with a student, and our entire staff was just as horrified as any of the parents were. The other kindergarten teachers are probably frustrated and disgusted at their colleague's behavior and would hate to be associated with her in that regard.
