How'd you choose LO's name? ...Top Hottest Baby Names of 2014

Did your name your LO after someone? Made up a name? Checked out a baby book?

I thought this was interesting:

"New entries to the Top 100 include Khaleesi from "Game of Thrones," at Number 18, and Elsa from "Frozen." Along with the "Hunger Games'" Katniss and Hazel from "The Fault in Our Stars," names that rank high in 2014 show the continued influence of celebrities and pop culture."

from the article "The Hottest Baby Names of 2014"

  • He is a Jr. Well technically a "II" but you know what I mean.

  • Neither of my girls full names appear on the list, though there is one "close" to dd#1 middle name. Actually I think I got dd#1 middle name when I lurked on here briefly during my first pregnancy. DD#2 middle name actually comes from SO favourite hockey player and hero. It is a popular boys name but I have never seen any girls with it.

  • I didn't pick LOs first name. DH picked it because it's Oscar de la Hoya's wife's name lol. But I got to pick her middle name (a name I have always loved) and she goes by her middle name.

  • We couldn't find any names we liked. DH ended up suggesting LO's name and I didn't hate it so we added Otto the list. AsI thought about it more, I liked it and brought it back up to DH who forgot he had suggested it. DH had another name that he like but I had vetoed early on and he wouldn't give up on it. So going into the hospital we had two names. It then took us 12 hours after LO was born to decide which name fit LO better and I really let DH decide. I thought he would choose the name he really liked, but he felt LO fit the othe name better.

  • We couldn't decide on a name for a boy. Then we were watching Archer one night and my husband said "if it's a boy, what about Archer?" At first I wasn't sure. But a couple days later I said "yep- Archer it is!" So the TV show got us!
  • Well after having 3 girls, you kind of run out of girl names that you love for the 4 th one. Our two older ones start with a P, and there wasn't any other P names I like for the third one so she got a name that started with a C. So we figured the 4 th baby should also start with a C. Good thing it was another girl because I had no C boy names I liked.
  • DH and I couldn't agree on any names, and then he heard G's name on TV and thought it was pretty and it was the only name I agreed with. We went with the Italian spelling partially because I was somehow already calling her G for a nickname and it was a nice nod to my middle name and my mom's half of the family, which I'm very close to. Her middle name is Grace which DH is obsessed with and I would have agreed to use as a first name, but he didn't like with out last name.
  • We name after family members.  My twins were named after DH's maternal grandparents and their names were perfect.  Baby boy didn't have a name till the week he was born and even then it was kinda iffy going to the hospital.  I jokingly said well, how about Atom and DH said that wasn't a bad idea, to which I responded with @-) .  But then he clarified and said that he liked Adam.  The twins middle names were something that I liked but since Baby's name was a random pick, his middle name is after family.
  • Her dad picked out her first half of her first name (it's hyphenated) and her middle name. The second half of her first name is the same as the second part of my mothers name and my last name. Was that hard to follow? :-/

  • Named after a family member who is no longer with us, somewhat a made up name but for the record I will say I have now found 3 other people with the same name. 1 with the same spelling and 2 without so maybe its going to become popular? But its not crazy and you can totally figure out how to pronounce it by looking at it. Her middle name is a name I love and DH wanted to use as a first name and if I were able to control what people would call her for a nick name I would have been on board. But seeing has how every time we test drove the name people would automatically shorten it to something I didn't like I nixed the idea and we slid it to #2 for the middle name spot. I think her name is pretty but its not everyone's style but the meaning behind her name is special to DH and I so I could care less ;)
  • After our girls were born too soon, we had to come up with names for them for the birth and death certificate. We didn't have any picked so we chose Saint names. When I found out I was pregnant with DS, I wanted him to have a Saint name too. We chose Matthew because it was DH's and DH's grandfathers Saint name.
Plus, it means 'gift from God'. Although I'm agnostic, DH isn't.

I love Khaleesi from GoT but I can't imagine naming my kid after her. At least not until she gets her shit together and takes back her family throne (kidding, I'm a nerd)
  • my sister was considering the name Arya (another GOT character) before my niece was born. I love that name, but I'm glad she didn't end up going with it.

DH and I picked out our names for kids years ago before we started trying. My mom hates them. It's nice to see both are on the top 100 names list, something to rub in her face (not really).

  • One night we were sitting on the couch and the name Julia just popped in my head.  I mentioned it was pretty and DH agreed.  We didn't fully commit to it until a month or so before she was born.  As for her middle name, we were joking one night about naming her something "holiday themed" since she was due in December.  But then when we said Julia Noelle out loud, we thought it went together nicely.  We decided to go with the spelling we did so it was a little different than the standard Christmastime "Noel".  Plus, DH's father grew up in Noel, MO and DH is not a big fan of his father so he didn't want to spell it the same.

  • I've always loved the name Audrey, so I just had to convince DH to like it too. Then we chose 'Noel' as a middle name because she was born on Christmas Eve.
  • We chose Arlo because it was the only name of dozens that we could firmly agree on and feel kind of excited about. I liked Milo and DH hated it; I'm sort of feeling like maybe we dodged a trendy bullet there so all is well. But Arlo's on the top 100, so there's that. The continued presence of Django on that list still causes me to walk away whistling. Nothing to see there folks.
  • We knew we liked traditional names, so I kept looking up lists of names until we found it! That was waaaay before baby. We like to choose, let is set, try out something else, come back to it in a year, then decide. :D
  • Ds1 has a family name from DH's side and we had a really hard time picking ds2 name. DH has a very Italian family and wanted to go with another family name, Saverio. I wasn't having it, it was just too much for me. So when we had a false alarm at 34 weeks we were driving to the hospital listening to the pats game and Tom Brady made this amazing throw to win the game by 1 point and DH said "with a pass like that we should name him after Tom Brady" and there it was. We both fell in love with Brady! He didn't come until 4 weeks later but it stuck in our heads after that night!
  • We were going to name her at least partly after my mom (who passed away) but mil was adamant about her having her name as well. That would've made her name Deborah jean or Norma Irene. I couldn't do that to my child, so we chose a name I fell in love with out of one of my favorite books and DH chose the middle name. Actually from a video game but it's really pretty, so we agreed. :) her name is spelled differently but so is mine and I put up with it. Actually kind of like the uniqueness of it.

What book is that from? I've always thought it was a unique name and very pretty.

We chose C because it was classic and common, but not at the top of the list. I have an unusual first name that most people can't pronounce correctly, and I hated that growing up. And since no one in the entire country shares my full name, I have zero anonymity in the age of Internet. Except here :)
  • I picked C's name because it is a traditional name that wasn't über popular and was classic. I thought it was really pretty. (I still do)

  • I'm pretty sure DD's name came from Grey's Anatomy..it wasn't going to be her name, but when she was born, she didn't look like the other girl name we'd chosen. We don't know anyone else with her name, but on D13, there is another baby with the same name, and OP mentioned it as her DD's middle name. She has 2 middle names, one is mine, one is a mash up of her 2 grandmother's middle names. Not knowing all these babies names is driving me crazy!!! DD is Sloane Elizabeth Maelyn

Serious question, is there a difference?
    I was wondering this too!
I think Jr. is when someone is named after the father, and the father takes on Sr. and II is when they are named after someone else like a grandfather or uncle.
We have a Jr and Sr in our house now, I was explained to it that when we had our son he is the Jr and DH became SR if my son is to have a son and name him the exact same name my grandson would be the II. Hope that makes sense.
  • My mom's name was Eleanor. She died on the same day our daughter was born, she is named Nora after her.

If your son has a son and names him the exact same name as himself and your husband, then wouldn't that make the hypothetical grandson the III?

    That's what I thought.
  • @ameegee‌ your MIL sounds like a peach
  • DD was named because on our 3rd date DH said he wanted to use it. FF to pregnancy and we couldn't agree on any other name so that's what it was.

DH likes traditional names (boring). I wanted something different but still a name everyone's heard before. DD's name was popular in the 80s but now? Not so much. So I agreed to DH's original request. :)

Could be, I honestly am not sure. I am just sharing what a nurse told me in the hospital when we named him. I should Google it. But I am not worried anyway I am pretty sure my son won't pass the name on.

EDITED TO ADD: This is from Wikipedia so clearly I was wrong.

In order to properly use the suffixes I, II, III, Jr. and Sr. you just have to understand what they mean. If a son and a father have the same name 'Jr.' is used to refer to the son and 'Sr.' is used to refer to the father. If a name is passed down through a family, the grandfather would use the 'I' which stands for the first, the father would use the 'ii' which stands for the second and the son would use 'iii' which stands for the third.

Yeah she's great and not at all crazy.
  • I fell in love with the name Lorelai watching Gilmore Girls. It also helped that it ended up being one of the only names dh kind of liked (there were no names he felt strongly about at all... Just his personality) her mn is the same as me and my mom.
  • I had like J's name since I had first heard it sometime in high school (it's an actor's name).  I threw it out during one of our brainstorming sessions, not really thinking DH would actually go for it.  He did and we put it on the short list.  It eventually became one of the top two and then the "one".

  • Pinterest! I was looking at nursery inspiration and on a nursery wall, from a willow branch hung the name HOLLAND. I thought about it for 2 seconds... loved it! Sent my husband a text asking him what he thought and was expecting yet another NO WAY text... instead he loved it too! And since our last name is Dutch, his family is Dutch.... Holland it was! Holland Adella, middle name after his great grandmother.
