Having a really hard time with baby's name...

I am actually having anxiety over naming our baby girl. I feel like no matter what we end up naming her, I will regret it. Right now we have a list of about 10 names, and it surprisingly hasn't been too hard to find names that we both like, but nothing stands out to me. I like them all, but I don't LOVE them. Our current top 5 are: Natalie, Violet, Allison, Lucy, Ruby.

My middle name is my mothers name, and DH's middle name is his fathers name, and I really wanted to continue that because our parents names are the same way. But my name, Jennifer, doesn't sound good as a middle name to ANYTHING that I like (at least in my opinion), and especially when you add it to our long 3 syllable last name. But I am starting to think who cares if it has the perfect "ring" to it?

I don't want to decide until we meet her, but I want to have it down to 2 names to make it easier. Any STM's have advice? Is anyone else having trouble? I keep thinking I will hear a name that I haven't heard for a while and fall madly in love with the name, but so far, nothing.

  • Naming DD was easy but with this LO it has been so difficult. We're team green so we have to do a boy and girl name. Our problem is a bit different because we haven't been able to agree on many names. We have a girl FN that we both like but I don't LOVE it.

  • We were the same with our first. We didn't decide until the hospital. I was certain that he was going to be Colton. We talked about Gabe\Gabriel about a week before he was born.

DH looked at me after I gave birth abd told me to decide after seeing me in labor. Even though I prefered Colton, I knew he was a Gabe. I let DH choose if the middle name was going to be after him (Adam) or his dad (Joseph). He chose to name him after his dad.

So we went in at 90% Colton Adam and came out with a Gabriel (Gabe) Joseph.

  • I had this exact issue with N. We went with Natalie ;) keep looking and if there is a name you keep going back to, then there is your answer. I was never in love with Natalie but once it became DDs name, I became in love with it them. In this case, I bet once you meet your little girl a name will feel right. Don't limit yourself to two names. Have a top two of course, but go to the hospital with 3-5 names. As for the middle name, could you play off of Jennifer? Like Jean, Jo or June? Or just use Jennifer, you won't be calling her by her full name (often) so it's not as huge of a deal. Good luck!
  • How about Jenna instead of Jennifer? I think it flows 'ok' with both Natalie and Allison.
  • No advice, but we are having a hard time too. Naming DD was easy, but we cannot agree on a name this time around. We are going to use DH's name for the middle name, but that is as far as we've gotten. We both avoid talking about it too, because neither of us want it to turn into a battle. Ugh.
  • We are having a reallllllllllllly hard time. I feel like she will never have a name.

I think Jennifer flows just fine with all of your names. If it has meaning it doesn't have to flow perfectly. Also, if you really sit down and think that you don't like the middle name Jennifer, you don't have to continue that tradition.

  • I really like the ring/flow of Natalie Jennifer :)
  • Yes - we're really stuck with coming up with a name for DD#2 that we love as much as we did for DD#1.

I wouldn't worry too much about the perfect flow thing - you will hardly use the full name at all.  I'd focus on the flow of the first name/last name as that will be used more often.  Our last name is a consonant-heavy bastardization of an even more consonant-heavy Polish last name, and several names have been cut because they sound too harsh with the last name.

  • I think its fine to wait until she is born. That is what DH and I are doing. We have a front runner, and then a few other names we like. But we refuse to commit to anything until we meet the little guy. I've talked to too many people who have ended up changing their babies name in the hospital and in one case after they got home. I think there is nothing wrong with not having a name picked out yet! Good luck!!
Same!  DH and I are in this boat. We have a strong favorite, but I am reserving the right to change the name til I see his little face.  I'm glad we are having a boy because prior to our A/S we were not having much luck coming up with a girls name with both liked at all.

Keep looking for inspiration all over, books you like, movies, old family Bibles, etc.  And it's perfectly okay to not have a name at this point, we've still got 3ish months.  Deep breath!

  • We're team green and absolutely have no names at all. We decided that if we have a girl middle name will be Luella since that's my husbands grandmas middle name. Otherwise I like names I just don't LOVE them. My other two boys weren't even hard to come up with!
  • Ugh, I love the name Violet so much. That would probably be at or near the top of my list, if my fella and I didn't have certain bizarre criteria for baby naming, haha.

I think Lucy Jennifer actually sounds really sweet. I think the problem with the others is that they each have three syllables, then Jennifer has three syllables, then the last name, you say, has three syllables. It can be kind of monotonousish?

But I totes agree that Jenn, or Jen, or Jenna would go really nicely with the longer names!

  • We're having trouble deciding too! Im in the "have some ideas or a list but don't decide until you meet them" camp. We're team green (not by choice lol stubborn baby) and have what I think is our perfect boy's name, but I feel lost about girls names. I love too many and the one that I thought I'd decided on I'm concerned doesn't go with our family middle name. I thought about posting a poll or thread for combo suggestions from our lust but was worried N14 might be sick if those. And the Baby Names Board is terrifying!
Of your names, I lLOVE Violet! I think Violet Jennifer is lovely and could work with a 3 syllable last name :)
  • Same problem here. This baby girl is going to be one of the most special people on the planet to me, and thus her name clearly needs to be the best girl name on the planet. It's a lot of pressure, lol. Good luck!
