Small appetite for 1st feed?

Anybody else have this issue? When LO wakes up in the morning he isn't even really hungry. There have been times where he will wake up and be perfectly content for quite some time in his crib. Recently when I go to feed him he only eats for 6-8 minutes on one side and that's it. In the past he would eat for about 10-12 min on the first side and then 3-5 min on the second. Maybe he's become super efficient and he's drinking the same amount but just more quickly? He's 4 months EBF.

I've been pumping to relieve the pressure of the untouched side but I'm wondering if I should stop doing that because maybe this is his new routine?

Re: Small appetite for 1st feed?

  • My DD just wants to play the first 30 min she is up, and refuses to eat until she's ready... She is 7 mos and has been doing this since probably 4 mos. if I catch her while she is still very tired and not too awake she will eat. Not sure if that's helpful. It could just be that LO is more efficient like you said.

  • Yes. It's normal. Babies aren't really like clock work. Even if they eat 6-8 times a day, they don't eat the same amount at each feeding and don't spend the same amount of time between each feeding. Both my kids ate a lot more in the afternoon and evening than the morning.

  • Just noticed that this morning with mine! She was in her crib for 15 minutes before I got her this morning and didn't even seem hungry- I still fed her since I needed to go to work but she only are for 5 min on one side
  • Thanks for the input!
  • My LO was not a big eater first thing in the morning.  It didn't seem to matter what she had through the night, that first morning feed was always much less than the others.  It sounds totally normal to me.  I'm sure LO is more efficient as you mentioned, but maybe that's just not a hungry time.
