How to transition from rocking/bouncing baby to sleep to not having to rock/bounce?

At night we can usually put DS (4.5 months old) in his crib after he has fallen asleep nursing or having a bottle or else he'll soothe himself to sleep. He may need the occasional bouncing of the mattress for a couple minutes. Naps are a different story though. He naps in a pack-n-play but I have to hold, bounce, and pat his back until he's asleep, then usually wait a good 10 minutes before I attempt to put him down. How do I get away from this method?? I am a nanny and he comes to work with me. It's getting to be very difficult to get him down for naps if the other child isn't napping too because of how long it takes. Any suggestions? Have I been doing the bounce thing for too long that now he's used to it?

  • Swing is a great idea because it's easier to wean them off (just run it slower and slower) I think the general idea is whatever you're doing try to do it a little less and a little less until finally you're not doing it at all.

We're currently trying to break the "rocking to sleep" habit we've formed. As pp said, trying to do less of it. We used to rock DS until we was passed out, now for the past week we only rock until falling asleep then put in crib. If he wakes up and we have to pick him up, we don't rock, just hold and shush (if that makes sense)

Eta- our ped said we could start "sleep training" to break the rocking habit and get him to fall asleep in his own but I'm not ok with it yet

  • I do have a swing and he used to sleep I that, however, I had bounce him in my arms before putting him in there. I had gradually slowed the swing and eventually got it so I'd put him down in the motionless swing for his nap. I thought the next step would be to put him in the pack-n-play. He'll sleep in it for a while most of the time, it's just the getting him there that needs help.

I've been trying to bounce him just until he's sleepy and then put him down, but he wakes up right away and cries, which then seems to wake him up even more.
