Should we try for number two?

Hi all,
With our first child we got pregnant so easily, literally one night of fun.  Now that i'm planning it just makes me nervous that it will take some more time. I'm also still debating if i'm one and done, or if i want to give my LO a sibling.  Decisions/ Decisions, can anyone else relate?

Re: Should we try for number two?

  • I got pregnant quickly with my first and then my second was much harder to come by and we ended up needing fertility treatments.

At your age, the expectation is that you would get pregnant within a year of trying so don't be too surprised if you doctor isn't all that concerned.  Do you chart your temperature and/or use ovulation predictors?  I found that helpful to see that my cycle was somewhat "normal" and, of course, to give us the best time of the month to try.

You could always request that some simple bloodwork be done just to see where with stand with your FSH and AMH levels.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • thank you so much.

  • I got pregnant the first time while on the pill. I thought when it came time to conceive number two it would be a piece of cake. I did get pregnant a second time quite easily, but I had a mc at 10 weeks. It was over a year until I conceived again. I would give it some time.

  • Waiting is hard but these women have given good advice.

When is your next routine visit?  It's worth mentioning that you are TTC but no need to go just because you haven't conceived after a few months.  Hang in there and good luck.
  • I wouldn't worry unless you know for sure that you have had good timing for all those months and the only way to know that would be to temp every day. If you have an annual visit coming up, I would mention it then but I wouldn't make an appointment just to discuss fertility.

The resources @theresat858 are great and there is also a helpful newbie blog at the top of the TTGP forum. FWIW, I got pregnant right away with my 1st but had to temp and chart to get pregnant with my second. We did get pregnant on our first cycle temping and I was in my 30s both times.

  • I had a similar experience - we got pregnant very easy with E, but it took 8 months for this baby (six actively trying, 2 month break).  A few months is really nothing, especially if you're not charting and temping.

We actually got pregnant this time when we put baby making on hold for 2 months so we could go to Napa/Sonoma and drink lots of wine.  We ended up conceiving on that trip.

If you don't want to go the charting route - pick up some digital OPKs, they'll be helpful in predicting your O date.  A few months really isn't long though - give it time.

  • No other advice other than what PPs have already said. Just adding moral support coz I'm right there with ya. Going on month 5 of trying for #2. I know it's too early to be frustrated but I am anyway. Chin up.

  • Was just going to add that if you breastfed your LO it can take up to 6 months from complete weaning to completely regulate your periods and ovulation. Your body may still be hormonally "weird". I had great success with the digital fertility monitor:

  • My first daughter (from my first marriage) was somewhat of a surprise- We weren't really trying or not trying, so I wasn't feeling any stress or counting the months. Several years later, when I was remarried, MH and I knew that we really wanted to have one more so started trying right away. It took almost ten months with an early miscarriage in between. I was under so much stress that my Dr told me to take a break and, of course, that's when it happened. She also said that for healthy couples, under the age of 35, it typically takes about a year to conceive. FWIW- I was 33 at the time and MH was 37. Good luck
  • @theresat858 gave great advice. I can completely sympathize with your dilemma though. My kids are spaced far apart not by choice. Fertility friend has great information and BBT/OPK are great at getting to know your body.  Good Luck!

  • Ditto what everyone else said. A few months is nothing to worry about. We got pregnancy easy with #1 and it took over a year with #2. We didn't carefully chart and temp but liberally covered our window each month, lol. It is perfectly normal for it to take some time.
