Insurance covered new breast pump

I was unaware until recently that most insurance companies now cover breast pumps. I came across a link on babies r us that helps moms simplify the ordering process.

https://m.toysrus.com/shop/index.jsp?categoryId=22729026

You call give them some basic info and they email you with a list of covered pumps. After you decide which one they contact your insurance and handle all ordering and shipping. I just received mine today 2nd day and it was completely free.

I am so thrilled with the whole experience I wanted to share and hope you feel the same way.

  • @clumsyatheart, I have insurance through work, and they require the same thing! It's kind of confusing.

  • I need to call mine next week at 28 weeks.  I have to get it through my durable medical equipment provider.  I hope they give me a list of all the accessories I'll need to buy.

I am jealous of y'all! I call my stupid insurance and the plan I am on is grandfathered in and doesn't have to follow the affordable care act so They don't cover any pumps :((

Edit: hit done before I was finished with my thought
  •  I had to call a particular phone number (listed on my insurance co website) but all I had to do was provide my id number and answer a few questions about my due date...pump arrived less than a week later! A Ameda Purely Yours electric double. I'm thrilled! I've never had my own pump with the other kids.

  • Mine will pay for it, but not until after the baby is born.  They were recommending I call from the hospital after birth.  Bleh.  Oh well, at least it's free.

  • It sounds like a lot of you are calling your insurance directly. I called the number listed on the babies r us link provided on the original post.

    1-855-567-8669

They contacted my insurance for me on my behalf to handle all the red tape. They sent me an email with pictures of which brands were covered under my policy and processed my order the same day after receiving my confirmation on which brand I wanted.

If you have questions or need an ally to go to bat for you it's worth a call. They're there to help eliminate confusion and offer support.
Under the affordable care act it's required for most insurance companies to offer at least one breast pump. Good luck to all of you :)

  • A lot of it seems to do with who/where you call. Medela also provides this service for free. For their pumps of course. It also seems dependent on where you buy it. Most require it to come directly from hospitals or medical supply companies. Here's the link to Medela's insurance page

  • There is also a local company that is contracted with insurance companies to provide breast pumps.  512-445-0600 - Medical Express.  I always prefer to go local if I can!

  • I called my insurance directly and they only allow me to purchase from certain companies. But I can order it 30 before my due date. I'm pretty excited. There were tons of options and I'm getting the one I wanted.

  • My insurance only covers a manual pump.  Oh well.

  • I ordered mine this morning. Even though I'm more than 30 days out. I called my insurance co and they gave me the names of 3 different companies.

Each company carried different brands. The 3 were edgepark, Byram and Lucina. Edge park sucked. Wouldn't even let me fill out paperwork yet. When I explained I was having twins they wouldn't budge. Kept saying it was against policy and if I have birth early to call them after. Right because that's what you want to do in a hospital grrrrrr.

Lucina didn't carry Medela. So this left Byram. They were great. Said they can adjust the date based on the farthest my OB will let me go. Said I could fill out the paperwork online and then they'll process it as soon as it hits the 30 day mark.

So that's what I did. Hope this helps!

I can get one, but unfortunately it isn't the one I want. I had a Medela last time, and it really needs to be replaced after 7 years. I want another, but our plan only covers Ameda :(. Bummer.
I just found out my plan covers an Ameda pump too.  I've been reading reviews online.  Is it that bad?  I want Medela too but am trying to see if the cost is worth it versus a free Ameda.

My insurance will only cover a manual or the cost equivalent through a durable medical equipment supplier. We can get the one we want and they reimburse us the cost of the manual. Maybe see if your insurance will reimburse you the cost of the Ameda so you can purchase the Medela you want. You would be responsible for the rest but it would be better than paying full price for one when your insurance would cover the other. No opinion on which is better since I've only used Medela and loved it.

  • I originally called the babies r us breastfeeding pump people, and they said at 60 days out I'd qualify for a Madela, but had to pay $95 to upgrade to a PISA... i mentioned this to my HR and they said I was actually eligible at any time during pregnancy for *any* pump... i ended up with the Madela Freestyle, the best Madela carries.
For me I was actually better off calling the insurance directly, something I never thought I'd say!

Helpful for those who live around you, I guess?
Does this post seem really spammy to anyone else? "pumpingfan" username...

    Very much so.
  • I tried the Babies R Us number first yesterday, but they didn't have a contract with my insurance company. So they gave me the # to Sterling Medical Services 1-877-856-1293. My insurance is Blue Cross Blue Shields.

I just received my UPS tracking number and my pump will be here on Thursday! I picked the Medela Pump In Style. I will update everyone if I run into any snags.

  • I called my insurance the other day, they told me all I needed was to get a prescription from my OB and to fill it at any pharmacy. So I went to target, filled it and took it home today!
Which pump did you get?  Mine is Target Pharmacy too but they think it's only Ameda.
