Low ovarian reserve??

Ok, so I may be freaking out a bit..if so, please tell me...

I went for my first round of blood draws and ultrasounds. First off, the lady took more than 10 vials of blood...holy smokes I was not prepared for that...

Then we did the ultrasound (sorry if this is tmi), the doctor found a cyst on my left ovary. She said its nothing to worry about but I mean really how do you not!? Then she began counting...1,2,3 and I began to break out in a sweat. At the end of it all, she said my ovarian reserve was around 9. I asked is that high or low and almost shed a tear when she said low. She said its nothing to worry about again (I hate that phrase now) and said to wait for the fsh bloodtest to come back. I am a Google queen and I think I just terrified the crap out of myself. Its gonna be at least a week or two until I get any results, I have the hsg ultrasound on Monday..

Is this familiar to anyone and if so is it really "nothing to worry about?"

Re: Low ovarian reserve??

  • I'm sorry your appt didn't go well. The waiting sucks when trying to get results.
My wife has this dx. We only found it after 12 iui's and 2 failed ivf cycles later. Her FSH came back at 20! For someone her age it should have been 10. The silver lining was that it qualified her to use donor eggs and we used mine. The first ivf cycle with my eggs she got pregnant. We look at it as it was meant to be this way.
The follicle count alone isn't enough for a dx, it really depends on your fsh level. Which btw fluctuate during your cycles.
Good luck and know if you're not happy with your results get a second opinion.

  • I don't know much about Low Ovarian Reserve, but I wanted to offer my support.  I know waiting on test results can be very scary.... but hang-in there.  Once the come back you will have a better idea of what you are working with.

Like @Karlamo said, it is better to know now than do multiple cycles that aren't working only to find out there wasn't a good chance of success to begin with.

I'll be thinking about you, and let us know when you find out, so we can support you either way!
