I'm dying

I have heartburn so bad that there's the feeling of a lump in the back of my throat. It's as if I have food stuck back there. Which I don't. I made my self vomit yesterday. That was not helpful. I've been popping Tums like I'm at an acid reflux rave. They don't work anymore. I took a Zantac this morning and nada. Please tell me that someone has a magic cure. Or at least post a picture of a puppy to make me feel better.

  • Mylanta?? Mylanta and Zantac are the things that usually work for me.

  • I have been feeling the same. The heartburn has been awful. I have no miracle cure, but I can give you a cute picture of my puppy!
  • Is that what that is??!?! I was wondering! I thought I was just eating too much and it wouldn't fit hahahaha.  I threw up in my mouth a little last night... it was horrible.

  • Here's my puppy!
  • Dairy will make your heartburn worse. My acid reflux is gone after cutting dairy out. Drink lots of water and try to limit your diet in fat. Talk to your doctor.
  • Definitely try milk and sleeping with your head slightly elevated.

When c/s patients have gas pains in the hospital, I make them ginger tea. It's a half cup of hot tea, topped off with ginger ale. I made some last night for myself hoping it would help my heartburn, and it did! I also had some tums, so it could have been a combination of the 2. Good luck :)

  • Only thing that worked for me was apples. Talk to your doctor though, it sounds pretty awful.

  • i'd been doing 75mg of the zantac twice daily- then my doc said i could go up to 150mg twice/day.  75 is enough for me as a morning dose, but now i do 150mg around dinner time so that the heartburn isn't waking me up in the middle of the night.  i do find milk somewhat soothing, along with a small serving of something carb-y and fairly plain.  tums were useless to me.

  • I've also been having bad heartburn so I was discussing it with my fellow OB nurses. One had the tip to mix 50/50 milk and 7up. They said it works wonders but I don't like milk so I'm not that desparate yet.. Haha hope it helps!!
  • It will probably take some time to get rid of it. I don't think you will find instant relief. When I get that bad it takes a couple of days. Now I take a Zantac whenever I eat anything remotely spicy. As for now, try not sleeping flat. Elevate your head and shoulders when you sleep and sleep on your left side. Believe me, the position that you sleep really helps but like I said it will take a couple of days. I had horrible acid reflux like you describe years ago when i was not pregnant. I started changing the position that I sleep and it helps. If all else fails call the doc. Good luck.

  • Milk of magnesia! My friend swore by it while pregs and it has helped me a lot!

  • Ugh. The Zantac helped slightly, but I barely ate today since I'm scared of the burn/lump. The lump is still there, but not as terrible. Someone recommend carbs - that makes it so
Much worse for me! I did call the OB but haven't heard back yet. Ugh.

  • I've heard apple juice can help. Keeping your head elevated at night and lying down on your left side can help a bit, but talk to your doctor. I was on a Rx a few years ago for it bc none of the OTC meds helped. I'm sure there's something they can give you! Otherwise, I hope all our pics are a nice distraction :)

  • I have preexisting heartburn. My first trimester was hell. The doctor said I can take OTC Prevacid. It's a class b drug. Which is safe during pregnancy. It's changed my life. Hope you feel better.
  • You many need to be on the zantac on a regular basis.  Taking one may not do the trick.

  • My doc told me that Zantac was the next step if Tums isnt working. She told me it's twice a day everyday. I'm holding out another three weeks to see if I can get though it but it hurts!

Here's my boy as a puppy. He's 60 pounds now but still my little cuddle bug.

  • Also. Thanks for all of the puppies!

  • I've heard that you can mix a little baking soda with a small amount of water and drink it... Shake it down, you'll have a few amazing burps, and the heartburn will be gone soon after.

Never tried it myself, but my cousin swears by it (prescriptions don't work for her), and I also don't know if this is safe to do while pregnant. I can't think of any reason it wouldn't be, but haven't looked into it at all, nor am I even remotely a doctor!
  • Sorry! I know what you mean about the lump. Sometimes it feels like I can't breathe it's so burn-y! What helps so far:

    Milk + honey
Eating super slowly and chewing a lot
    And having good posture

I've been sleeping propped up too, and that's definitely necessary.

I'll be curious to hear what your doc recommends. I'm planning to talk to mine about it at my next appt.

  • Yeah. That has been my worst symptom of pregnancy so far. I feel ya on the TUMS popping! I have a prescription for extra strength acid medicine (Omeprazole 40mg) but I read up on it and every search result said not to take it while pregnant.. that it had fatal results in animal testing :( wth...

It definitely does feel like I ate too much and it wont fit right now lol. Every time I feel the need to belch, I get a bit of regurgitation. . YUCK!

  • And here's a puppy!

  • Tums just came out with new chewies, they taste like a combination of chewable pepto and strawberry starbursts which sounds questionable, but they work really well.

It has more of whatever it is that's in Tums, and I take 2 or 3 and I'm good vs 6 Tums at a time and an apple, and milk.

I would rate my HB at a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10 though, it's not debilitating but it isn't only a nuisance. So if yours is worse that prob won't cut the mustard.

Also, thinking of mustard gives me heartburn.

  • I would definitely try taking Zantac regularly. For me, I have to take it a few times before I feel results.

  • Also, be sure to stock up on baby hairbrushes if the old wives' tale is true. And here is a puppy.

  • Pepcid 40mg daily has been my only relief.

    image

  • @Cryssteen‌ i would be careful not to take too many Tums! Too much calcium causes kidney stones and I wouldn't want you to have to go thru that too! (Happened to my friend). I don't know if this was mentioned but try eating more frequent, smaller meals and avoid anything high in acid or spicy (even oranges and tomatoes can be high in acid). Also, make sure you stay upright 2 hours after meals. Hope you find relief!!
  • Update: pepcid AM and PM every day.  I'm doing well, except when I forget to take it.
