the f'n vacuum

Does anyone else have a child who is obsessed with some random household object? Kieran is obsessed with the damn vacuum. Always talking about it. Always trying to drag it out of the closet. If I say no he cries for it. He is terrified of it. So why the obsession? If I act like I'm going to turn it on he's starts freaking out. First my overreactive mind thought maybe it was a sign of autism but he shows no other signs of ASD. I went to websites and checked for other symptoms.

Thoughts? Just a weird stage maybe?

Re: the f'n vacuum

  • My LO is obsessed with dishrags and wiping things down.  It is the most random thing to me.

  • Omg, my DS is obsessed with the vacuum, too! He has been for the longest. He talks about it all the time. He spent a month or two trying to call it "dah-dee" and finally has gotten the hang of "dah-doooom." I wear him on my back to vacuum, and sometimes he'll bring me my wrap at random times, talking about vacuuming. And just like you said, tears ensue if I tell him no, we're not going to vacuum right now.

I let him touch/pat it when we're done, and sometimes he "helps" me wrap the cord up, which seemed to help ease his anxiety about it earlier on. He still doesn't like me to run it unless he's on my back, though.

Mine too! And the remotes. @singingsea‌ Maybe it's the pressure or volume of the vacuum that's making him cry?

  • Ok....so from what I'm reading above I'm hearing his fixation is normal. ;)

Yeah I have to hold him if I want to vacuum. And if I start it while he's on the floor he'll scale me like a rock climber.

OMG yes. He calls them "motes" and he has to have them.

It's defininley the sound. He startles easily.

He has a little broom he carries around too. If only I could train him to actually "sweep"

  • DD is also afraid of the vacuum. When she hears it she scrambles for the closest person to pick her up.

  • OMG -- Yes!!! The vacuum!! LO is so obsessed with it that even the sight of it will induce a meltdown if he's not allowed to drag it around. After about 2 minutes, he starts saying "on"..."vacuum on." I've hidden it in so many random places just to keep it out of his line of sight.

  • E loves brooms. He has been dragging one around for a half hour this morning. He says "feep feep" and goes to town.
  • Mine obsessed with the ice machine in the fridge. If he hears us getting ice in a cup, he comes running as fast as his feet can carry him. If any ice cubes or pieces of ice fall on the floor, he scoopes them up ninja like and shoves them in his mouth! If I get the the ice that fell on the floor first and throw it away, he gets very upset and starts throwing a tantrum. So much so that I have to find a piece of ice that is small enough to give to him to shut him up.
